My mate just bought one of these and its pretty slow, it hits boost and does go faster but im pretty sure my old mans corona would keep up (3S-GTE vs 3S-FE), I know its losin alot of power though the 4wd compared to what a 2wd car does.

So how does he make it go faster? I know all theb usuals and they are coming

- cold air intake/pod filter
- exhause
- frontmount (what kind of retard puts an air using cooling device on top of a hot engine? :? )

Im guessing the turbo is too small so what should he replace it with? Also any other ideas? He doesnt want it to be a rocketship but would just like more turbo like preformance lol, cheers.

Disclaimer:
In advance before anyone bitches I didnt search the site for answers I did but 30+ pages of results came up and I got bored looking and not finding anything I didnt already know - so there! :P

First you have to service it properly: oil/oil filter/plugs/seals/cambelt/water pump/oil pump/new coolant etc. (Mr Revhead can sort you out with good prices for the genuine parts)
These cars are slow from factory due to being underpowered and overweight.
To get the power of these engine is not very hard.
Don't bother with front mount and exhaust if you are going to do only that.
Although top mount used is victim to heat soak.
In my opinion it is best to replace with W/A system from RC/ST205.
Then next mod is steel CT20b either second hand or from Warwick (Mr Revhead).
Then you could do 2.5-3inch exhaust and all other common boyraces mods.
My ST165 (1987) did 13.5 with similar mods listed above. that is with me shifting reall slow (not used to my short shift/nana-ig the gearbox as it was first time on the strip after new turbo)...

Although you could take other route and do front mount and massive turbo with external waste gate, aftermarket computer etc (typical drag machine), but for that amount of money spent on 1990 car, you will trouble getting them back if you are going to sell the thing...

Turbo wise id say he should use a steel CT20B (can get them new from Warwick), up the boost to 14-15ish psi (will have to disable the 12.5ish psi boost cut) and she'll get up and moving. That with the exhaust, filter, cooler etc will be better.

Otherwise if hes on a tight budget  go the cheap way by removing excess weight, ST185s are whales.

And are the Coronas fast or something? Cos my 1992 GT4 is faster than my old pocket rocket Detomaso, which wasnt slow for what it was!

EDIT: Damn Sergei beat me to it

Cheers for all that guys, hes not on a tight budget but also isnt going to go overboard. That CT20b i'll look into for him any idea on prices? The corona isnt overly fast but has some balls yeah, I havent driven the GT4 so i'll put it down partly to his semi retarded gearshifting abilities too :P

I have ST205 box in my 165, and it is perfect. (apart from rattle on engine braking, but that due to - i think - TRD clutch)... Compare to C series the E gearboxes are much better in synchro department....

Pretty much the plan yeh, how do I get rid of the boost limiter/cut out? Is it in the comouter or a physical part that does it?
