stock intercoolers on other cars

Postby rage » Mon Aug 28, 2006 2:13 am

im looking for an intercooler to replace the crappy stock intercooler on a lancer gsr. Not wanting to go overboard, so i was thinking a stock intercooler from a supra. mk4 would the be the best of the lot i assume.

im looking to get around 160kw reliably and so i need an intercooler which will support that... ie cool the charge sufficiently to avoid detonation at boost pressures from 12-14 psi.

has anyone got some spare supra IC's hanging around, oculd you either shoot me a pm, with pics or post here.

cheers.

CD5A or CM5A? The newer shape lancers you would want to replace everything on account of how $%^& the piping is. Just get an Evo intercooler and piping and it will fit no problems. Probably the cheapest option by a long shot as well.

cm5a new shape. the intercooler piping is real $&#$% up.

later evo shape intercooler and piping requires a either hacking the original bumper to bits or sourcing a different front bumper, eg an evo4 etc, and i dont want to do that....

thats a clean intercooler but the inlets and outlets are placed in a funky way which would make fitting a bit tricky. was thinking more of the mk4 supra intercooler and how it compares to the likes of an evo intercooler.

Yea, not that good, low surface area for the wind to cool down that toastee air.

There was some research done to see what stock intercoolers were the 'best' and the 7ZA70 ones came 5th on the list with the skyline GTR ones coming first.

with the early supras, if its not a JZA70 one, then you're just wasting your time :)

There is an autospeed article on IC flows, you have to pay to read the whole thing, but the results were:
Flow Restriction: Worst to Best

4AGZE (GTZ type)
RB20DET
CA18DET
1GGTE
SR20DET (GTIR)
1JZGTE (Soarer twin)
1GGTE (Water to air)
3SGTE (ST185)
13BT (s5)
13BT (s4)
EJ20 (sti)
13BTT (s6)
13BT (s4 trust aftermarket)

If you want a very compact unit (height wise), go for a Porsche 944 turbo unit, its over 120mm thick.

Japanese Market Mitsubishi Galant VR4 Air-to-Air Intercooler

Image

Flow - Direction A and B 184 cfm (20th overall)

Mass - 3.4kg (6th overall)

Core Measurements - 19.7 x 41.5 x 6.5cm = 5314cm3 (6th overall)

You may not be aware that the Japanese domestic market 151kW Mitsubishi VR4 received a much larger front-mount intercooler than the Australian delivered variants. But is it really a 'gun' performer? Both the JDM VR4 core volume and thermal mass are very impressive, but the flow bench reveals its major shortcoming - it's outgunned by 80 percent of the field.

This is another good intercooler from a heat exchange perspective, but lacks the flow to make it suitable for genuine high performance. Keep its flow limitation in mind if you're looking to tweak an Aussie VR4.

Nissan Pulsar GTi-R SR20DET Air-to-Air Intercooler

Image

Flow - Direction A (air entering large diameter pipe) 236 cfm (8th overall)

Direction B (air exiting large diameter pipe) 233 cfm

Mass - 4.7kg (3rd overall)

Core Measurements - 29.5 x 35.0 x 5.8cm = 5989cm3 (4th overall)

We had high expectations for the Japanese market Nissan Pulsar GTi-R intercooler and it didn't let us down. Factory-fitted to the 162kW version of the SR20DET, this 'cooler offers good airflow together with very large core area and thermal mass. A great pick if you're chasing every last bit of cooling performance.

This is an excellent all-round intercooler we'd be confident using in applications in excess of 200kW.

Note... the gtir cooler would also need some end tank changes to make the inlet and outlet useful for front mounting..

By the way, I made a mistake with the aus supra.. although, the cooler below from the 2.5 twin turbo in japan looks exactly like the aus 3.0L cooler..

Quote:
Toyota Supra (JZA70) 2.5-litre Air-to-Air Intercooler

Image

Flow - Direction A (air entering shorter pipe) 265 cfm (5th overall)

Direction B (air exiting shorter pipe) 252 cfm

Mass - 3.8kg (5th overall)

Core Measurements - 48.7 x 17.8 x 7.2cm = 6242cm3 (3rd overall)

Australian-delivered Toyota Supra turbos from the late '80s never came with the option of the 2.5-litre 1JZ twin-turbo, which was available in Japan. The 206kW 1JZ-GTE in the Japanese JZA70 Supra is fitted with the long, skinny all aluminium intercooler seen here. This 'cooler offers a huge core volume and impressive thermal mass along with airflow that's bettered by very few in this test. This really is a great unit.

There's no reason why this intercooler can't be used on engines making considerably in excess of 250kW.

^^ good post. is there any info on there about any other coolers ? im particular the legnum vr4 stock intercooler. its very similar to the JZA70 intercooler, same design, almost same dimensions. off a 6A13 2.5L twin turbo v6 engine. im interested in this intercooler because it comes up cheap, and has very simple inlet and outlets, would be very easy to frount mount on any other car.

info: 500 x 155 x 65 mm

heres some pics:
