First off, the 3SGTE never had VVT-i. Second, its nothing to do with the manifold, its the actual cam shaft(s). Third, fitting a VVT-i system to an engine that never had it would be an absolute nightmare. It's ECU controlled for starters, so unless you're going for an aftermarket ECU that supports it, you'd have to go with an N/A one from either a Redtop 3SGE or a Blacktop 3SGE, and it wouldn't take too kindly to lower compression and boost.
Are you sure you're not getting mixed up with TVIS? Because that sounds more logical, and no, it would be pointless to do on a Gen 3 motor.
