Gearbox Q's??

Postby TRD_ZERO » Sun Sep 03, 2006 7:24 pm

What is the difference between the gearbox on a silvertop manual and the one that comes on the blacktop 5 speed? and how can you tell if it is lsd or not without taking it apart? Does any of the silvertop gearboxed come in lsd?......The thing is my Gearbox is struggling to engage gears like dropping from 4th to 3rd it grinds before it goes in same when changing down to second but its fine from 5th to 4th.............im guessing it is the syncros....so i went to pickapart and found several silvertop gearboxes. Should i fit one of those on???? or get syncros and replace them myself???

Silver tops run two gearbox's the pre facelift ones have a c52 while the face lift ones run c56's... its the c56 thats found on the blacktop. Its the ratios that differ
you will be lucky to find a LSD if its a stock one itll be torsen (from what iv hurd they have a solid center?)
best way is knowing what car they came out of and the code on the firewall

Yeah i know but its not a huge amount of muni for a pickapart gearbox and if i find a c56 gearbox it might be worth it? where is the code on the box im looking for or what is the code i need from the chassis to get the c56 gearbox. All help appreciated.

you need to find the code "c56" under the trans/axel part of the plate to find a c56 funnily enough :)

I guessed that much but i wanted to know where on the box or make it even easier what chassis number am i looking for which would have the c56 box in it. Does a c56 cv fit into a c52 gearbox as i couldnt see the damn code on the gearbox just other numbers which im guessing is a serial number, but the cv had 56 written on it like it was from a wreckers in yellow vivid. Thats why im asking if a c56 cv fits into a c52 box are the splines different??
Thanks all constructive feedback appreciated
