Where can I get surge tanks from?
What size is reccomended and what fuel pump? (Walbro 550hp? external?)

Mines 2L, got it made by Michael Sinclair, its a really really nice tank, awesome build quality. Cost $120 + fittings. I use an Airtex fuel pump, its a bolt in upgrade for a VL turbo, so can support alot of power, but is fine on my N/A 4AGE as well, been a real good pump so far, nice and quiet too.

When you plumb it up, get 3 inlets/outlets. One on top being an overflow back to the fuel tank, the one at the top on the side being the feed from your low pressure lifter pump, and your EFI Return line. and the bottom one is the outlet to your engine via the high pressure pump.

Be sure your fuel return line goes back into your surge tank, otherwise you can run your high pressure pump dry.

HiTech motorsport in pukekohe,auckland usually ahve a good rang in stock or esle they can custom make to suit your requirements, they do heaps of rotary stuff as well so could be worth a look/call.

So really he wants four connections. Two in the top, one for return line, one for feed pump. One in the side at the top as the overflow back to fuel tank, and one at the bottom as the delivery pump outlet. Also, if you can get a conical bottom that'd be better too.
If you're really trick inclined you could get a simple level switch installed near the top. This would warn you when you're down to your last 2L of gas.
The taller and skinner the better, and stilling fins are always interesting but a bit overkill.

Would there be any problem running your std in-tank pump as your lifter pump? And then your high pressure external to the injectors? Or would the std in-tank not keep up?

for surge tank setup you usually run low pressure intank pumps that dont flow that good. as it will fill up the surge tank too fast making the fuel circulate back into the main tank thus making the fuel hotter.

I have a low fuel warning similarly constructed. My facet draw pump is mounted close to the external ali panels. When it runs dry it vibrates so badly it drums on the panel. Instant and bloody loud warning! Last 2l or 6km to go.

Hehe yeh I have mine doing the same, around hard corners, you can hear the low pressure pump running dry for a couple of seconds as it vibrates away on thin support panel, then chugs away like normal when it sucks some more up. Yay for main tank with no baffles, makes me really appreciate how much difference the surge tank makes.

I run a surge tank as I discovered the fuel went into suspension in the foam of the cell whenever I went over a large jump. The EFI pump sucked up a little bit of air and took "forever" (in racing terms) to clear. Made you want to get out and kick the heck out of her.
Those low pressure pumps are amazing when dry. I can't believe how much they vibrate. Mine is mounted on cotton reels to stop vibration destroying the pump... but when its dry it bloody near vibrates the car!
