which sub to buy?

Postby deaf_rattle » Tue Sep 05, 2006 7:22 pm

I am looking at buying a new sub to replace my 2 10s that im running
I would like a sub that will go pretty loud 140dbish

I am thinking of a soundstream t412 ($359)
or a soundstream VGW-12 ($299)

the T412 is DVC (2x1ohm coils) 900watts RMS 89db sensitivity
while the VGW-12 is DVC (2x4ohm coils) 600watts rms 87db sensitivity

More specs can be found here

the thing about the T412 is ill need a new amp, with the VGW-12 i wont, as i have a 2x360watt rms at 4ohm amp which would power it fine.

any comments would be most helpful

cheers

well if i got a new amp for that sub, i would be giving it more than 700watts

but basically i want as loud as i can with 700watts from my current amp without spending a shit load.

what amp are you running? cos if its a dual 1 ohm coils then you're not going to be able to parallel it down on a 2 channel cos the load on the amp will be .5ohm (dbdraging impedence).

If you wire in series you'll get 2 ohm, so is your amp 2 ohm stable bridged channels?

if i was going to go with the first sub, id buy a new amp Jaycar has a big grunter that is like 1000watts rms at 2 ohms or 1500watts at 1ohm

but i should really spend the money on my rebuild, so im thinking the second option. as i could run the 4x130watt rms amp that i have now, bridged at 2x360watts rms at 4ohm to give the sub 600-700watts rms.

unless i have some better options.

Basically im looking for the best bang for the dollar.

i will need to buy a new amp anyways to replace the 4 channel that im running my speakers off because it will be powering the sub.

cheers

what is the model of teh amp you wish to run.. i'll let you know which sub is more suitable.

By all accounts, the first sub, T412 with the dual 1 ohm coils is not suitable for your amplifier. I'd be looking at a mono block if you were to purchase the T412.

The VGW-12 is a more suitable sub if you wish to power off your bridged 4 channel

IIRC around the 1500-2000 mark, some stupily high rms rateing too.

Flame Q Subwoofers
This woofer is designed for ported applications while still delivering excellent sonic thrust in sealed enclosures. Either way, the Flame Q Subwoofer is loud enough for even the most distinguished power junkies. Its dual 4 OHM voice coil and 120-ounce magnet gives way to a dynamic depth and superiour tone that you're sure to hear.

AW1006T
Common Features
PHAT 2” Multi-layer Foam Surround
Stamped and Balanced Aluminum Cone
Dual 4 Ohm Voice Coil
2 Ohm or 8 Ohm Operation
6 mm Cast Aluminum Basket
Multi-connect Lug Lock Terminals

Seriously man if you only wana spend shit all on a sub(s)

2 options

Buy a tsw-30* series woofer. These go absolutely nuts for the price

or if u got heaps of boot space

Buy an RE 8" sub $179 brand new. Chuck it in an ABC box. Port it right etc

and your RE 8 well go harder than your local hoodrat's Reactor 15" pumping out 1000watts max when its only doing 50rms :P :P jjks

But yer an RE 8 properly ported etc go $&#$% insane

Talk to gfunk on wwww.forums.nzicemag.co.nz

96LancerSEi wrote:I dont know alot about them....
except:
ABC = Aperiodic Bi-Chambered

essentially it is like turning 1 box into 2 chambers that are not sealed from each other, having each chamber ported and tuned to a different frequency (usually 1 octave apart)

So it is like a bandpass box but with nice flat response

so you tune 1 chamber/port to say 30Hz and the other chamber/port to 50 or 60Hz
