my 4 agte is still blowing smoke !!!!! it is all to do with the oil feed to the turbo i have restricted it down to 40 thou and its stiil over feeding it !!! can any one give me some ideas cos i want to get it tuned but it will fill the work shop with smoke i have removed the feed line and tried it just by running it with a oil can feeding it and the smoke goes away so i am 100percent sure this is the problem

Its amazing how fussy turbos can be with oil drains - don't dry the turbo up too much (ie: restrict feed) unless you're 110% sure its not a drain problem.

yeh i had a mate in whakatane who had a similar issue. all came down to the oil drain. the pipe work had to much drop before it went into the sump and was collecting.

m-tens are a ho hum turbo though.
Also check your motor for crank case pressure .. i.e. make sure you are running 2 breathers on the head .. i had a issue like this maybe 3 years back ... turned out to be a cracked piston...

1.cracked piston
2.Oil feed still too large
3.Drain too small , on rong angle
4.Engine cant breathe sufficiently
5.Turbos no good

seeing as its using m-ten series turbos just go find or borro a t25 running lo kms and see if thats any different. Remember that that model or turbo ceased production in maybe '84 so you are using an oldie and if not rebuilt i put my money on the oil seals.

I have exactly the same problem on my starlet with a T25 on , 1mm feed hole , 19mm outlet good drop to factory sump fitting . Unfortunatlly I can't tell you how to fix it as I haven't managed to fix mine yet either :(
I too am almost certain that its a draining problem , but I have checked the sump for presure buildup (none) .
My plans are to
(1): fit a presure regulator on the feed line and see if this helps,
(2): trial a pump on the turbo drain to see if this improves it
(3):try something else if these ideas don't fix it

I also have had 4 diferent turbos (2 freshlly rebuilt ) on the car and the problem stays the same annoying bloody smoking .

good luck sorting your problem

I had this prob too in my AW11. what i did to eliminate the turbo being at fault was have the feed restricted to about 2-3mm and then had the return drain into a bottle on the ground...

try that and see what happens :)

Was about to suggest that.
Run a drian hose from the turbo straight out the bottom of the turbo thru a hose to some sort of catch bottle or oil drain tray.

Then start and run for a while and see what the result is.

If it's ok, then the oil drain is the problem.

If not, the has to be the turbo if removing oil pressure to the turbo stops the smoke.

What is the angle of the feed? as in, does the feed hole point straight up to the sky?
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.
