Superstrut Help

Postby AE82 FXGT » Sat Jul 29, 2006 4:14 pm

Hey all, I have an ae101 gtz levin and have recently been having those disturbing creaking sounds coming from it. It makes creaking noises when going over bumps or whenever the suspension travels, and lately it has been making weird scrapping sounds whenever I turn to a certain degree. The sounds are coming from the front left side.

I have had a look at these threads:

viewtopic.php?t=47624&highlight=superstrut+creaking

viewtopic.php?t=40109&highlight=superstrut+creaking

and they sound like a similar problem but don't really conclude what is wrong.
If someone can shed some light on the problem it would be greatly appreciated.

and when I spin the wheel when its on the car, it makes a metalic type scrapping sound, it does this when straight or turned, this is the wheel bearings right? It happens on both front wheels.

when its jacked up and you spin the wheel? sure its not just the brakes making that noise?

Yeah the whole front is jacked up when I spin them. I thought it might be the brakes but it's not a constant noise as I spin it round it only makes the sound at certain points.

68068g in the link seems to be the common joint for going as ive done on my old and new gtzs, also the front arm joint that its linked gives problems too. The scraping noise will most probly be pads on warning tabs like suggested and wouldnt be related to the worn joints, even though its intermittent.

Do you mean 48068G in the link? As in the bit that the leg coming of the strut connects to directly?

Right, so I'll replace the front pads and have another look at it.

Thanks for the help so far guys.

I be checking the brake pads. they have little metallic parts embedded in them to make noise when they are almost worn out, and they can contact and non contact the disc as it turns.

Yeah I'm getting the front pads off Revhead now,
so hopefully the pads will fix that sound.

Which leaves me with the creek as the suspension travels which I guess would be the superstrut lower arm then?

I'll replace those and see how it goes, cheers guys.

What choices/ prices are there for changing the shocks in a s/strut. not after full monty race gear, just an improvement over the worn out old ones?

Choices were a bit limited when I looked.

Being on a bit of a budget I ended I ended up with new standard shocks and trd springs care of mr revhead, and I have no problem recomending it. Car drives and grips really well, a huge improvement over stock.

Hey, I replaced the arm that was suggested which fixed half the problem, but there is still a really annoying scraping noise when I turn right to certain degrees. The thing is when I load up my car with people (5 people) the noise fades. So the lower my car goes the less noise it makes, any new suggestions??

Ok I've had a decent look at the car on a hoist but still haven't found anything odd. The noise is still there and is only coming from the left front area and i'm going insane.

Is there anyone that can help?
Surely this has happened before to someone?

I think it would be something that rotates (but I don't see anything unusual on the rotors or hub, it seems to only do it when there is load on the wheel). The noise will slow down and speed up with the car...

bent hub?
hub loose? just came across an aw11 making a weird noise, sounded like a creak turned out it was a bent hub/chattering wheel bearing caused by the hub at some stage taking a whack
