Arc eye

So anyway me and dad where doing some welding today.

The one time he doesnt say 'alright' before lighting it up, I get flashed real bad.

It was manual arc, so pretty much the worse it could have been.

Everything went black but came to normal pretty quickly. I didnt think much of it until now, my eyes are a little sore and everything seems a little pink.

im worried ill have sore eyes for the next 3 days. Ive heard arc eye is where you burn the back of your eyes and it blisters up. My dads had it a few times and said if its happened to me im in for some pain

Has anyone had any experience with it?

No, but heard many a horror stories about it.
I think at the time it's not so bad but when you wake up the next morning it's at its badest.

I've had it before and $&#$% does it suck! It feels like theres sandpaper rubbing on your eyes , definatly the worst the next morning.

I got this out of medical book at home:

Flash burns are like sunburn in the eye and can affect both your eyes. Your cornea can repair itself in one to two days and usually heals without leaving a scar. However, if the flash burn is not treated, an infection may start. This can be serious and may lead to some loss of vision.

* Blurred vision
* Vision changes

lol, Ive had by accident and by stupidity afew times.
not to comfortable, but you should recover in a day dor so, especially if it was just the one flash.

one flash shoudnt do shit.
you do get a burning feeling when you get flahsed, normally goes away after a couple of minutes

arc eye generally only occurs when you have a lot of flash, when you weld or spot weld with no mask,

arc is probably the softest flash the flux coating tends to dull it a bit, mig and tig are a lot brighter.

ive had it when i was younger and thought i knew better,
did about 2 hours of spot welding with a mig , feels like sand in your eyes, and burns, the doctor prescribed some kick arse drops and was sorted in a couple of hours.

i was a wee bit sore in the eyes after the flash.
3am the next morning it was like battery acid mixed with fine garnet in the eyes and unable to see properly for 12 hours afterwards , even after consultation with opthalmic? surgeon who done all he could.

Im not an expert on welding, but I would have thought arc/tig would be the worst because MIG lights up hardly sfa when welding, need to get a lighter lens to see anything (about an 8 when mig, when arc welding I use an 11)

Maybe im just over reacting I was around heaps of it today with no helmet (stupid me) but one flash in particular really got me. Oh well I hope its all good tomorrow morning

How long were you exposed to it for? I'm guessing you weren't dumb enough to go "Hey, this isn't good for my eyes.... And it hurts.... I should probably look away.... Or close my eyes...... Yea...." and then look away, in which case, you will probably be agrovated for a few days, and then be sweet. Well this morning wasnt too bad, I can still see but my eyes sting and are watering I dont think its very bad at all though.

Atleast I have this to show for it



Cant wait to go racing, got two sets of 5 point harnesses too.

And unlike rick/pete my car goes forwards too

sick man im gona come have alook soon. did you do it all yourself? is it possible to get a cert for it if you do it yourself? i thought it had to be done professionally?

Nope you dont have to get it dont by professional cage builders.

The person doing it must have the skills to do the job professionally though.

My dad has welding certificates. Even still I need to take it to a Tech Officer to get the tick before it can be homologated.

Its not something everyone can do though.

I had to borrow a mandrel bender to do all the work
