Serious knocking when on hard lock...

Postby Quint » Sun Sep 10, 2006 1:12 am

Ever since i have put a temp. replacement set of alloys on the front of my car (cheers johnny :D) whenever you go to hard right lock there is a substantial 'knocking', not just a click, but the car physically moves up and down.

Anyone know what could be the problem, When i crashed, the rear end took the impact so i don't think its the rack at all, recently had a wheel alignment (a week) so it can't be the tyre hitting the gaurd, so confused >_<!

It can't be a CV because its a RWD.

Are the wheels in perfect condition? Could be substantial damage to one of them?

use a torque wrench.

if i put all my weight on it its waaaaay too tight.

some where arounf 65lbs is where you want it.

also i small amount of anti sieze is a good idea. and make sure the seat is clean

check your left rear, a mate had a customer who complained of a bumping type situation coming from the front when cornering a certain way, turned out the rear tyre had a serious amount of damage to it, transfering this to the front.

As yours has had a rear hit it, on the drivers side if i remember correctly, then it could have pushed things out of alignment & when cornering right your loading the left side, hence the knocking.

just a though

Wheel nuts are fine, one of the tyres is _semi_ bald, but thats nothing to worry about.

The wheel that took the impact was taken off the car (it was $&#$%) and i put the front ones on the back and the replacements on the front (they are significantly smaller) Only thing i can think of is that the chassis got tweaked, and if it has..... $&#$%.

To better describe it the 'clicking' comes from the right (i believe) and the entire front of the car shudders and probably moves about 20mm up and down through each 'click' cycle. So messed up.

Had it up on stands when i was replaceing the rear crank seal, didn't notice anything funny/unusual... except maybe that the (not sure what its called) strengthening arm that goes accross the rear of the sump from suspension arms was loose (NOT SWAY BAR) (as in bolts), but that could have just ben rattling loose very slowly, as i don't know how a knock would do that.

But even in saying that the chassis has moved, the lower control arm would have gone before that, and its fine, about the most i did was ruined the bearing in the hub and goosed my alloy.

I'm completely perplexed :(

sounds likt something is binding somewhere or you useing a set of wheels with a higher offset and there contacting the sway bar or soemthing.. i'd check around the stub axel area for scratched/polished bits etc

are you using shank and washer nuts? i put new wheels on my car with these nuts and got a similar sounding clicking sound, turned out the nut wasnt completely flush against the hub ( it looked flush but wasnt ) and putting a second washer on each nut got rid of this.

or there could be play between the wheel nut and nut hole...

had this problem on my fx
turned out to be the the inner tread of the tire was rubing on the wheel arch sumwhere and each time the tread went past and rubbed it caused the car to bump up and down like you were saying, this only happend at very low speed, if i was doing a u turn it would make a clicking rubbing sound. look in the wheel arch and c if you can see any wear or anything where it could of been rubbing

Had a good investigation today. Nothing seems to be fouling on the gaurds, put it on hard lock both ways, still the same, nothings rubbing! I just don't understand...

Could it be the powerstearing belt slipping or anything like that? I was thinking it could be the oil, but theres plenty enouhg in there (and u'd notice it other times, not just a hard right lock)
