4AGE Oil Temps

Postby Jebus » Mon Sep 11, 2006 6:30 pm

What are the limits of safe oil temperatures for a stockish 4AGE, using a good 10W40W.

What is a normal operating temperature?

What temperature is considered dangerous and is bordering on doing damage?

Hot to trot....

Oil temp between 80 and 100 degC would be OK if you have good
pressure. Over 120 deg and you are heading for trouble.

A lot of modern performance cars have water cooled oil by the way of an alloy housing that goes between the filter andthe block.
This uses the engines water system to help to cool the oil.

Now if water temps are around the 80 to 90 mark,
whats the point if both the oil and water are the same temp?

In my experince we regulary see oil temps up to the 130's, 140's even with a cooler fitted and see no problem with it once again as long as the pressure is good.

Often have 130plus a bit, as long as your oil is good you should have no trouble.

Cool, cheers guys.

Next question which Matt brushed on was is the oil temperature going to be the same as the water, is it worth having an oil temp guage to keep an eye on it?

How to know if you are hot ??

Postby jondee86 » Fri Sep 15, 2006 10:53 pm

As already mentioned, oil temp climbs much faster than water temp
when the engine is under high load (because the water has a radiator
and thermostat system designed to hold the temp steady).

Downside is that the oil gets thinner as it gets hotter, and it gets hotter
because it is under high loads. At a certain point, the oil can no longer
maintain a film between the bearing surfaces, and overheating, melting,
and/or seizure will occur :(

Brief excursions into high temp with a good synthetic oil are unlikely
to cause problems. But extended running at high temps (especially with
mineral oils) will increase wear, degrade the oil and lead to premature
engine failure. Serious race cars have engine, trans and diff oil coolers
for good reasons

So yeah, if you have a race car running endurance events, and you
want to protect you investment, an oil temp gauge is a good idea.

Cool to be hot ???

Postby jondee86 » Sat Sep 16, 2006 12:00 pm

YES !! Highly recommended for extended high temp/high load running,
especially in vehicles modified for higher than stock power output :D

Not really necessary for "stockish" engines that just see a bit of high
rpm action down the high street on Friday nights
