I found this on the net today, started looking how pneumatic valve springs work and ended up here http://www.coatesengine.com/

Aspin valve engines have been around for years. More HP, but nobody has yet solved the problem of sealing properly for them to be anything other than an interesting experiment. They're not anywhere near suitable for a race engine, let alone a production engine... yet.

Similar thingy...
BMW was investigating "electric solenoid" type valves or something like that... There was technical paper written. I don't know where that paper is, but Autospeed has an article that mentions it.
