Toyota 1c/2c/2ct/3ct diesel engines intercompability

Postby mops » Wed Sep 20, 2006 4:35 pm

Hello guys.

Quick question.
How interchangable are 1c/2c/2ct/3c engines in terms of
-engine mounts
-gear box bolts mounts
-electrical system ?

basic question. if i wanted to convert 1c corolla to 2ct engine, would it just atraight bolt on ? or will i require some custom parts made up (eg. halfshafts, wiring modifications) ?

aswell I understand that the difference between 2c and 2ct is just manifold, turbo (with wastegate) and different (possibly only different adjustment) diesel pump ?

if i understand correctly these engines have mechanical injection ?

I seen come corollas 1c to 2c conversion, i just dont know what's involved.

Possibly anybody knows a good person/workshop to talk to about that ?
Thanks in advance,
Mops.

Background story:

Our family has this corolla wagoon 89' 1.8 diesel (1c engine). It's been in family for over a decade now, it still runs great but the engine is getting rather weak by now (approx 250000k's on original engine).. it's just worn.

I do realize that these cars are not worth much, but if I could get a replacment engine for it for a reasonable price I'd be keen to put it in.

I'm capable of doing the job myself, as long as the engine is direct bolt-in.
I'm not looking for massive power incerases...

I think if you get RWD version of 2CT (lite/townace) it might not fit.
Fuel pump wise - turbo pumps have boost compensation (basically diafragm looking thing on the top of the pump with the vacuum/boost tube going to it).
if you get 2CT out of Caldina/Corona/Corolla(if they came with 2CT) ir should straight bolt on. RWD defently has different water pump, and obviously engine mounts (and I assume all the radiator hoses, power steering hoses etc come at different angles) it also might have different inlet manifold.

would a 2c survive just having the turbo bits... (manifold, turbo, injector pump) bolted on??
When in doubt, down and out.

project is still open ;)

if 3ct will bolt straight in, then yes, i;m keen, pitty that you are in wellington.

ideally it has to bolt into the existing gearbox (including halfshafts, etc).
Preferably mechanical injection, co i dont have to stuff around with ecu, but again if it comes with the engine then might aswell be EFI.... i understand i'll need to make custom exhaust and stuff around the engine bay....
