my pistons rattle bad with my silencer in, i take it out and its like 70% better :D

Distinct possibility, its goddam deafening. No noise regs in offroad racing. Still I'm pretty attune to hearing even the slightest noise from my engine.... because it always means frig loads of money. Mine is also the shim under bucket solution, using stock buckets with the fences removed, ground convex and then rehardened. It then runs a longer valve with a silver steel cap of varying lengths to get correct clearances. Wayne Moriarty runs stock shim over and that mega dollar engine just purrs. No lifter noise there.

I wouldn't have thought that the shims should rock given any cam combination. Is there a possibility that the shims had become convex on the "flat" side due to wear?

Which of course is not possible first try. There was talk of "renting" out a set on Club4ag in order to get a baseline. However I doubt it will be available to you... might be worth investigating though.

There has been a few threads on the lifter set, in the tech forums on Club4ag.

purchase the thinnest one, then use that to measure the gaps- note the clearances, then calculate what thicknesses you need- then order. oh and you might want to get a price on the 1sz buckets first, they aint cheap

I looked briefly at shim costs when doing my engine and decided against it.
I put Kelford reginds in and they supplied little 'thingies' to go on top of the valve stem to make up for the ground cam... but after a valve grind, I needed slightly thinner shims. I got the engine re-conditioner to grind the correct amount off the top of the valve stems and this was way cheaper than buying new shims.

That’s a fantastic price Goat molesterer. Pity my next 1600 project will either be the 6a10 or I'll purchase a full Atlantic engine... but still I have yet to play with my 4g93.... what? Which direction? Huh? Oh no, brain explosion!
