bolting things up?

Postby NOLAW » Mon Sep 25, 2006 7:17 pm

ok i started bolting things up to my motor today and i went to go buy some bolts for my turbo manifold, exhaust dump etc, and was told that i shouldn't use bolts but put studs in to screw the nuts onto, is there any point in this or are bolts just fine?

only thing I can think of is if you use bolts and they rust into the thread on the block you're f**ked. maybe less chance of the nut rusting onto the stud or something?

nuts are better

i think because the thread stretches at both ends, helping 'pull' from both sides, rather than the thread just being on one end in the case of bolts (don't quote me on that though)

i know many race engines replace the head bolts with studs

In my opinion nuts are better becuase they do'n transmit torque over whole lenght as the bolt does (in other words if nut is not rusted you can apply more torque without twisting the studd of). I had may more bolts fail than studs. The most common fault is cam belt idler, if the bolt was replaced with stud from factory there would not be so many fails. (The common failure on 3SFE after new cam-belt and tensioner, while not changing the bolt is that the idler bolts snaps off, creating mess)
