My guess is, that it would run backwards, BUT, some times you may be able to either turn the diff head upside down, or, flip the diff over when you install it, ie, left wheel on the right side.

This does have its complications though, like drian bung at the top etc

Why not get a diff from the rear of a surf etc?

There is a safari LSD one for sale on Trademe at the mo, disc to disc I think.

You have a point there, I couldnt tell you if it changes direction through the transfer case.

go to www.ore.co.nz find the forum, and ask there, its a 4x4 forum, and always people online, so you'd get a better idea there. Someone would be able to tell you.

My understanding is they use the same crownwheel and pinion for front and rear in the Surfs, it just spins the opposite way to what it normally would when in RWD. Was reading up on it just the other day on a 4WD site linked from here.

If you are talking about using a live axle in the rear though you would want to check how easy it is to lock up the steering mechanisms. Depending how far offset you want to go it might be worth looking at a wide diff like a Falcon and then shortening just one side. A mate just had one axle done for $250 I think and then shortened the housing himself.
