I think you completely miss the point here.

Money isnt always an issue for some people. ;)

Why get 250HP from a V8 when you can get the same with an engine that weighs 1/3 as much, and gives the car a far superior balance/handling etc.

Also some people race in a class, eg a 0-1300cc class, 1301-1600cc class, 1601-2000cc class etc.

You cant just always add a turbo or whack in a huge V8.

Also, I think a highly strung NA 4AGE is an awesome engine for an AE86, because it's keeping with the historical character of the car. The 86 has always been considered a giant killer of sorts, the little car with the little engine that takes down the bigger more powerful cars. It would lose some of its charm with a 1UZFE or 3SGTE or something I think.

Yeah I recall there's a company in the US that buys gas turbine engines once they're uneconomical to keep servicing in planes/helicopters (Because they basically need a full rebuild after a certain amount of hours, better off buying another new one) and snaps them up for cheap, and stuffs them into cars. :D

Same people who make the turbine powered motorbike I think.

Maybe if it was 'My car makes' HP (this is the HP figure you get from a car that has never seen a track/speed event)

The ae86 in auckland owned by gary makes a dyno proven 137kw atw on a >10k budget. Do the maths?

137kw = 183.7 hp

Driveline loss of around 40hp?

= ~223 hp at the fly wheel, carbed, pump gas, non hub dyno

Forumla atlantic engines typically make 240hp, 250hp when brand spanking if your lucky.

But yeah, "my car makes" 50% more hp than that anywhos

According to the same formula my 20V DX has 342hp.

Yours works out to approx 322hp at engine Matt

To estimate true flywheel power from wheel power just apply the rules given at the start of this articles in reverse.

FWD cars - add 10 to the wheel bhp and then divide the result by 0.9
RWD cars - add 10 to the wheel bhp and then divide the result by 0.88

First get the 'less than' sign around the right way :wink:

In the trademe ad and NZPC article it was 132 kw which = 177hp

Going by the above formula this equates to 213hp. Huge effort that, but 250hp is another massive step up.

Yeah, daily driver, running pump gas, 213HP yeah right!

You just don't get that kind of HP from an engine that you can drive on the street! If you can then I will buy 2 please. As it would be great to almost double my HP and make it nicer to drive on the street.

240HP is still a long way from there anyhow.

true? What makes people think that is true? Because it was in a Mag? Because it was on the Net? Because the guy said?
I am always amazed at how 'show' cars make the most HP.
I am glad none of these big HP cars ever come to track days or compete in motorsport events! (although I would like to see it!)

Show cars often do make the big numbers, generally cause they've got turbos to make the numbers...how they drive is secondary.

Or more to the point, how long 'show' horsepower actually lasts.

It's easy to make a grenade engine, getting reliable power is what it's about IMO.

i never get too bothered with dyno results unless they are a direct comparison from multiple runs on the same dyno or multiple cars on the same dyno/same day.

the variation between different dynos is huge , and is exaggerated once you get to half decent power figures anyway.
