Toyota Sealant---how can you remove it?

Postby no_8wire » Wed Oct 11, 2006 8:48 pm

I want to get all the old sealant off the oil pan, so I can put new sealant opn. What can I use to get the sealant off? Thinners just glides over it...and hto water/ degreaser doesnt soften it...

Any help on how to get it all off?

Yep, wire brush or a blade... although the blade doesn't get into the grooves

Not sure how well that would work on a high temp sealant...but at this point, anything that wont damage the ali sump is been considered

A blow torch would go 5 times as hot as high temp sealent could handle...

Ah, i'd go easy on that blowtorch idea, if it is aluminium as you say, it has a MP of around 800-900 C which wont be reached, but the temp required for the metal to start creeping will be. If you do it quickly, wont be a problem. But any longer and the metal will slightly deform due to its own weight.

Best way to go would be in the opposite direction, and freeze it.

But i'd just wire brush it :)

Stop mucking aroud and just attack it with the wire brush! :D

Not sure if toyota grey does, but most silicone sealers don't like parts washer fluid, so you could try soaking it for a while and the silicone will most likely curl up and almost fall off.
