Warrant Tyre standards

Hey im just wondering if anyone has heard of a rule with warrants that stops tyres being to wide, i understand that they cant rub on or stick out from the gaurds. But the guy at the tyre shop told me that on my civic i cant have more than 185 ( i now have 195) he said 1956 was still safe but just wont pass a warrant, the thing is everyone i have talked to has never heard of this so you reckon it was bull or is this true?

ive got 205 on my civic na dthey juuuuust stick out from the gaurds and rub a touch and ive never been pulled up on it at wof time. Just as long as the rims dont stick out past the guards i think

I think im sweet the tyres are inside the gaurds *just* and the track width cant grow by more thatn 25 mm so as long as i havent $&#$% up the offset i should be sweet, mean im gonna go get my re-check now :D

My tyres stick outside my gaurds quite substantially, i havn't been done for it (has passed two wofs as is) So i doubt u have anything to worry about ;)

If the wof inspector sees the tyre is quite a bit past the guard they have every right to fail you on wof. On the other hand if the inspector doesn't click to the fact your car has tyres that stick past the guards, just how thorough is he at doing the inspection. Would you trust them to be competent in doing so?

My understanding of 'track width' is its measured from the centre of the tire as shown on the diagram in relation to fitment of aftermarket rims. Therefore the only reason for failing you is that they think the tire is unsuitable for the rim, which sounds a bit off.

Ask them to point out what 'rule' its breaking.

It's bullshit man, every car I've owned or worked on with tyres slightly bigger but still safe on the rim has never had a problem. Your tyre guy just wants money from you.

You cannot have a tyre fitted that is more then 5% greater rolling circumference then a factory tyre.
I am too lazy right now to work out how much bigger the circumference gets with each wheel size increase. But I have heard that going up one size is as far as you can go. eg 185/60/14 up to 195/50/15
Although I, as many others will, have had many cars with 17's that came with 13's or 14's and never had a problem. When I was a WOF inspector I would not have failed a car unless it was going to cause a problem when driving the vehicle.

Yeah cheers HRT thats the link that i posted above, i think i will be sweet and the tyre guy was just full of shit, he did think it was stupidity on the part of the wof stations so maybe he just had some bad info.
