As per title..As I was torquing a bolt up it snapped! :evil:

now how do I go about removing this sucker so I can get on with the re assembly of the block?

Its snapped off with a few mm protruding how ever not enough to get a decent grip on...So what do I need to do now?

got a welder?
weld something to it and use that to get it off.
otherwise drill into it and get some "easy outs". mitre 10 sell them

Too scared I will weld the bolt into the bolt for that! :lol:

be very carefull with easy outs, they snap too easily...

well the bolt snapped before 7 ft pounds...so hopefully should be easy enough to get out..

Get a nut just large enough to sit over it and weld around on the inside, wont end up welding to the block that way.

Oh, and if you drill it then made sure you punch it and get the drill dead centre otherwise it'll end up being a horrible job. Or just end up drilling it out lots, retapping the thread and helicoiling it (depending on what bolt you broke off)

Front crank oil seal bolt...one of the ones that take the 10mm socket

Or put a hacksaw cut across it and unscrew it with a screwdriver.

I went to cut a slot in it...and it turned!
I just took it out with my fingers...

What on earth could have caused it to snap then?

So I think I will be going and getting some 8.8 grade bolts!

Maybe it was actually damaged when you were undoing it. Had that happen before. Bolt broke off doing it up and when i looked where it broke it sheared off in the wrong direction but not enough to break completely

I know he has got it out. But another way to get snapped off bolts out I have used to remove a head bolt snapped off about 1mm BELOW the surface of the block. Get a piece of flat steel strap at least 2mm thick(or you might just melt the steel to the block). Drill a hole in it near an end the same size as the bolt. Stick the hole right over the top of the broken bolt and point the MIG welder down there on almost max power. Keep it going until there is no hole left in the metal strap(its full of weld). Then just turn the strap and the bolt comes undone. I wasted hours and $$ buying EZouts and getting nowhere. It took 5minutes to get it out the steel strap way!! There is also little chance of damaging the block this way cause the steal strap covers up all but the end of the bolt. Even if you get some weld 'splatter' on the block it 'wont' stick cause its cast iron.

Has anyone tried Koken bolt twisters? Their quite good.

Maybe the bolt has been torqued up before, and possibly stretched? then it could have bottomed out had no where to go butsnap. Just happened to be doing up the cam journals on my 4age. Only 8-9ftlbs. Measured the bolts and they were like 1.5-2mml onger than any other cam journal bolt. Also the threads just didnt line up, the bottom half of the bolt had stretched thread, so they didnt match up to an unstretched bolt.

We used a dremel to cut a slot in the top of it so that we could unscrew it.

I guess the lesson is, always clean and inspect all bolts.
