Surface rust on Chrome Mags

Hey All,

Just got given some chrome mags similar to modgies but they have a bit of surface rust on them. Does anyone have any suggestions for getting rid of the surface rust but not damaging the chrome? I'm not sure if that is even possible but I would like to try something before paying for rechroming.

Wont be chrome, chrome is a layer of chromium, and that don't rust.

I'm guessing its a machined finish. Unless the chrome has flaked off then it'd rust the metal underneath, in which case u'd need it recoated anyway

EDIT: opps didn't read what you said propperly, i'd try a rust oxidation agent, eg. Jenolite, it'll make a mess of the rest of the chrome but, ur refinishing it anyway

Has the rust all come through from under the chrome?

I got some rims recently, with a similar problem, half of the rust was actually ON TOP of the chrome tho, so after a bit of scrubbing, most of the rust was gone. The rest i'm just going to wirebrush (electric) and paint with silver paint, i'm not after show quality

i use the steelo's for my chrome bumpers on my ke35. i don't know if that would be the same sort of chrome as what is on your mags, but it works mint on the bumpers and never leaves any scratches and gets rid of the rust sweet.

Yeah, I'm not actually too sure if they are chrome or just steel. That may sound stupid but I haven't actually seen the mags as I am in London. They were dropped off at a mates place as we share a project car which they will go on. I thought if I got some info on what could be done to clean them up I could put his ass to work and have them all shiney by the time I am back in NZ

On the KE30 (our shared project car) the bumpers had some rust that seemed to go right through to the chrome. When cleaning them up the surrounding chrome would just flake off. I am trying to avoid a similar situation. I guess if they are a machine finished steel this won't really be a problem anyway.

We'll start with some less abrasive agents then and move on from there.

COKE! Beleive it or not it works wonders. I had your exact problem but with my cragars. Just use a steelo and some good old coke-a-cola you'll be surprised and it will make you think twice before drinking the shit again. If it removes rust whats it doing to your gut

So you're saying that acidic coke, is going to some how do damage to your stomach.... Have you ever given much thought to what your stomach is full of?

And btw a glass of orange juice is far more acidic than coke ever is/was, but I dont see people claiming that OJ is going to rot your gut.

It probably wouldnt clean things as well as coke though, in all fairness. Seeing as how it isnt carbonised.
