Gear shift lever

Postby AE82 FXGT » Thu Oct 19, 2006 9:20 pm

How hard is it to take out?

I finally got the crusty gearknob off my car only to find that one of the previous owners cut it down a bit. Now I want to fit my TRD knob off my old car and it won't fit cause it's not thin enough or has the right thread on it.

So I wana just take it to an engineer to get the thread put on. Thought about doing it myself with a tap and die set but figured that I would probably cut the thread wonky.

Any help or alternative ways of mounting (while still being able to be removed if need be) will help.

It's probably easier and cheaper to just fit a s/h lever that had not been chopped isn't it?

yea, but one I'm not certain on how to get it out, and second it's hard to fond just the gear lever anywhere as many people will only sell them with gearboxes.

From your signature I guess that your are asking about fwd AE101?
If so:
Remove the centre console parts - look carefully for all the screws holding them in.
Have a look at how the gearshifter mechanism is bolted in and how the shifter cables attach to it. The shifter mechanisms are common to any AE101 5 speed corolla so should be easy to find and cheapish to buy.

If rwd - more difficult to find a gearstick for sale on it's own but not (quite) impossible.
Pull the centre console off and for:
W55 etc. undo the top bolts and remove gearstick
T50 at the base of the gearstick itself is a sort of internal circlip. use a screwdriver to remove the circlip and then pull the gearstick out.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

yea GTZ, so front drive.

So it's fairlt straight forward?
Do I have to remove the centre console or can I just take the gearknob off and remove the gear boot and start undoing the bolts from there?

Thanks guys
