RIP - my AE86 Targa Car.

Was having a ball on Targa (up to 29th overall position), and getting dialled in on stage 5 when I miscalled a corner and ended up in the fence and ditch. My fault 100%, as I got too aggressive. The damage was nothing too bad, and nothing that couldn't be fixed quickly. Then.... 3x cars later, the red HQ Monaro looses it on the same corner, and literally rams and launches into the air off my AE86 (the rear damage and additional front damage). F%^&!!! My Navigator had to jump clear over the fence and run to avoid being run over.

At this stage I'm unsure if its feasible to be repaired. My gut feeling says no. As I don't do the work myself, and will have to pay others, I'm feeling it may have to be scrapped. If there is any experienced opinions here, I would love to hear them. I will note that the chassis still seems pretty straight, even atthe back as much of the impact was above the bumper line.

PS. No one hurt (the important point), but I'm very very pissed

looks pretty past it to me might be time to search for a new shell, as you have a lot of good bits! Could be fixable tho, if theres panelbeaters on here with some idea?

When did that happen?? I try to look around when they have pit stop in Palmy on tuesday but didn't see your car. I saw 2 other AE85(20v 4age) and 1 AE86 (16v 4age).

Yeah, judgin by the big kink in the b-pillar, I don't think thats' repairable. It would probably be a whole lot easier just reshelling it.

That orange one was the best Ae86 I have ever and will ever see. Its better than new. It cost them between $80k >$100 AU$ !! to build.

I was out on puk' in the mass down poor. Was only doing 100kph and aquaplaning everywhere down the back straight.

Yeah, orange one is the best AE86 I ever seen, it has been stored at my work for a week .
I think they should change the 30sec interval as it is too short. As when we had our Fiesta in Targa Rotorua, Mark Tapper actually managed to overtake 4 or 5 cars in it (2WD ~150Hp)....

Nasty Sorry to see such a tidy machine go to waste...if you're not in the trade then that'd definately be a reshell job. Even if you were a panelbeater that'd be some serious dollars worth of repairs.

Wow... thats crushed, bloody good that no one was hurt though.

But as someone has already said, thats motorsport.

This is the main reason I changed my mind about using my ae86 as a club car and instead opted for a more common chassis.

From the looks of it you'd be able to salvage all of the drivetrain etc and reshell and re-cage it?

Is the axle bent?

BUT, from you saying the chassis could be ok and the damage i can see there. i reckon it could be fixed. wont be a $1000 job but could be done.
bearing in mind i havnt seen it in person and theres always hidden damage

Man, that really is bad luck. I saw your car on the motorway a couple of weeks ago, looked absolutely immaculate I'm no panelbeater but if the chassis is straight would it not be possible to just do a roof cut? I guess it would also depend on whether the rollcage has been bent. I'd probably say reshell it except that AE86 shells aren't actually that easy or cheap to find, so by the time you derust, paint, strengthen, rollcage etc the new shell it could be cheaper just to panel-beat.

Out of interest (Leon, you might know something here), is Mr Monaro getting any grief from the officials for crashing on a corner where there was (presumably) already a zetka out warning of an incident?

a little offtopic but did you (or anyone) happen to get any photos or can describe the 20v ae85?? i sold mine to a guy who told me he would be he would be extendin the cage etc so it could run in the targa.. it would make my day if this turned out to be my old car!

Looks repairable to me a new left rear quarter and it should be fine.
You have now found one of the major problems of Targa a huge field of crews that have very little experince for a week long event .One of the reasons that Targa does not appeal to me any more.
Hope your repairs go well , as it will be cheaper than a reshell .

zetka wasnt out yet, only me waving the speed down. Took a few moments to get the zetka out, as both doors were jammed tight by bush (the soft landing! unlike the hard monaro).
