7afe Questions

Postby TRD_ZERO » Sun Oct 29, 2006 1:36 pm

Ive got a few questions for those that know and hope that you may set me on the right track. Im wanting to use a 7afe bottom end with my blacktop head as a turbo setup. What problems will i run into when trying to fit this into my car? Will my gearbox bolt straight up, will all engine mounts fit into place? I heard ill have trouble with fitting the cam belt and will have to modify something for it to fit. What issues will i be facing?

Now for the compression side of things. I heard i can use the factory internals from the 7afe as when i put the blacktop head on it will lower the compression down to like 7.9-8 or something along those lines. But id like to put 4agze pistons in it to make it a little more reliable rather than the weaker factory 7afe pistons. If i did put the 4agze pistons in would it lower the compression even more because im putting low compression pistons in? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Im just exploring all my options before purchasing an engine to start building on.

I think the BT head measured 38cc or 36cc cant quite remember
but def use the low comp gze pistons should see u around 8.5:1 with a 0.8mm head gasket.

cam belt, bluetop 4age one will work fine, just need to take a few mm off the idler pulley.

eng moutns the same

all 4a gear boxes will bolt up, neda make sure u get dowels fitted to the crank/flywheel

You prob want to upgrade the rods, i would suggest pauter ones.

need better valve springs in the blacktop head as well

basically not a cheap engine to build :D

you got bling, come to me and i'll build you one, cant give out all the secrets ;)

Why would i have to upgrade the valve springs? Im not looking at extreme power just something a little different so do i really have to upgrade the rods? Would i be able to use the blacktop flywheel or do i have to use the 7afe one? Dowels in the flywheel/crank? Damn expensive project aye im juggling the idea between a 7afe block or 4age one. Input appreciated thanks Baz

just do a 4a it will be way cheaper and easier.

the 7a rods should be ok for that power, but i'd say if u missed a gear real bad or something like that, then it prob put alot of stress on the rod and it will end up breaking at a later stage.

Sweet would silvertop rods be up to the task? when running a 4a with gze pistons 150-200kw. What about shot peening them, what is that exactly and how much more does it strengthen them?

yep if you shot peen the rods they will resist cracking better which will cause failure. If you get second hand rods you should atleast have them crack tested, if you can afford balance them too.

silvertop bottom end with 4agze pistons, black top head will go straight on. Dont know what you should do about cam belt but the rest is simple 8)

Im sure you could get silvertop rods and 4agze pistons and chuck them in your engine over a weekend. Run it around for a while like that and bolt on the turbo as budget allows.

They wont clear valves on cambelt failure like you want, but hey cant have everything unless you pay mega bling
