how long will a gear box last if......*pics* name that part

how long will a gear box(4age c52) last if you blow up second gear? it seems i still got every other gear just no second. im wondering if there were broken gear teeth floating around in the case then the whole would not function properly at all but since it does im thinking something smaller has craped out. so would it last a 300km trip from chch to picton? oh by the way second gear sincro was already pretty bad when it finally gave way.

Depends what you blow it up with....

More to the point, say your taking off up a hill, even redlining in first wont give you alot of revs in 3rd gear... it will be an arduous journey

what does it actually do? does it select 2nd? or just graunch, whirr, does it make any noise?


have you drained the oil?
if you intend driving it ( not recommended ) at least drain it first and see what comes out, ie chunks, metallic paste, anything?

if you drive it and it has chucks of metal floating around it will die very fast, id be wary about driving a few kms let alone 300k,

It has every chance of going for a while and then locking solid at an inconveniant moment. it happened to me in the middle of a busy intersection, I hate to think what might have happened on the open road, and mine wasn't even gone it ws just making noise up to that point.

Yep, if its really in that bad of shape, why dont you biff the car on a trailer and drive it back? Also - as was said earlier, what actually happened to 2nd gear? Might be the difference between getting it there and not.

well was shifting into it at about 6k and just did nothing and couldnt get it out of gear untill i forcefuly(sp) knocked it out and shifted into third. drove it across town and wend fine as long as i didnt attempt to go into second. going into first from a standstill is sometimes difficult so i try to do it when im just rolling allong. theres some cheapish boxes on tm at the moment and im wondering how difficult it is to change the box? one day job?

i reckon just chuck another box in. shouldnt take you more than a few minutes
maybe get an LSD box if ur last one wasnt, or a box off an fe that has slightly longer ratios.

Yup you'll be able to do it in a day, no problem.
Probably allot less if you try.
Good C52's can be had for $100 so it the only sensible option.

got my eye on these two boxes. i got a 20v so would it be worth the extra money getting the 20v box for the better suited ratios as opposed to getting the one from the 16v-4age? or are they the same box because the 20v box is from a 91 20v-4age pre facelift?

I would say they're bits of shreaded gear tooth. Synchro is bronze color and comes ot in tiny little spliners or specs.

Haha, yeah, they look a LOT like bits of teeth, but nobody can be sure without pulling the box apart and having a look. Like they said above, it will probably end up cheaper just replacing the box rather than repairing.
