Headlight control wires burning out

Postby Vertigo » Sat Nov 04, 2006 2:18 pm

hey,

for a while now ive had an iffy headlight lever, and i narrowed down the problem to the wires under the steering wheel. i used to be able to wiggle them, and itd come right, now not even that helps.

the problem goes as follows:
when the switch is....
off: headlights and parking lights off
on: headlights off, parking lights on, high beam indicator on
highbeams on: headlights off, parking lights on, high beam indicator on
highbeam flip switch on: headlights on highbeam, high beam indicator dimmed a bit

note that in any 'on' position, the headlight control wire gets very warm.

any idea what the cause could be? sounds like a short somewhere, but i cant figure out what it could be. theres nothing to cross under there. is this something youve heard of happening before?

btw, my car is an AE80 corolla.

Going by the fact you used to wiggle them and they came right, Id say the connections are less than 100% or you have a broken internal wire.

Have you got standard bulbs in?
There should be a relay for the lights, but Ive seen them wired up otherwise, which caused similar heat issues.
Cant believe im still a member here.

yea, temporarily fixed it yesterday, and found the exact connection that seems to be bung. but what could have caused it to act in this way?

have you put bigger headlight bulbs in? standard wiring will usually only handle a standard 55/60 globe. even the "artic ice" type lights can cook your wiring. if you are going to run up graded headlight bulbs you need to run upgrading wiring and relay run the lights.

ive just done the upgrades to my hilux... 130/100 watt bulbs is the shiz....
