VVT pulley makes loud ticking noise??

Postby lorolla24 » Thu Nov 02, 2006 9:50 pm

I've got a silvertop turbo and since i have rebuilt the engine with ZE pistons, I have never hooked up the VVT as i am running a LINK.

MAIN PROBLEM......
The VVT pulley Sounds like a REALLY loud tappet, and im woundering if it is because it has never operated and let oil though to it.
The other problem is... If a activate it if that will cause the cam to advance and contact the pistons(being 16v pistons).

Is anybody running a similar set up and using VVT??
And, Doe's it make any difference on a turbo set if you use VVT??

Thats cool, But I'm worryed about applying 12v to the solniod and the cam advanceing to make the valves hit the pistons.

I know the pistons are sweet running normal cam timing but if it advances 5 degress or what ever it is,it could give me all sorts of headaches.

VVT isnt an issue with gze pistons unless youv got ya timing waaaaay wrong to start with.

oh and iv worded that post slightly wrong.... you dont apply 12v to both sides!

Cool, I'll chuck some voltage on it his weekend.

So the other question....Is itn worth running the VVT on a This turbo set up??are there any gains to be had??

Yes lots of gains. spools the turbo up quicker, more response off boost.

On 8psi i gained another 40Nm on a wheel dyno with vvt.

I used VTT on the 20V engine I built with the GZE pistons.

Next question you might ask could be what RPM to switch it at?

from the net research I did found to sw it on at 1500rpm and off at 6500.

I may get a chance to refit and dyno that particular engine this month hopefully.

Sweet guys, That helps heaps. It will be awsome if it helps spool up, Did you have the cams in original shape or had they been Ground because i have not yet ground the cams to suit Forced induction, that would surely help HP readings?

1500 rpm to 6500rpm, Thats nearly my whole rev range. looks like the only time it will be OFF is a idle.

If you got any more tips to do with the cams in a silvertop turbo, let me know.

that was a 100% standard silvertop engine except for the pistons.

I might get a chance to play with the VVT settings on the dyno next week.

Will you stuff your motor if you don't replace a noisy VVT Pully?
