What should I do with this Cressida's engine?

Postby ollieboy » Mon Nov 06, 2006 10:08 pm

I got a Cressida for free today off some old asian dude, Its in alright mechanical order for its age, its a '89 and has 225,000kms on the clock. The thing is it hasn't had an oil change for those 225,000kms, I asked old guy if it had been serviced regularly and he said he only ever topped the oil up when it got low. I did a compression test and rings etc are fine, no rattle from bearings either. Changed oil, went black instantly, ripped off rocker cover and well its an interesting sight under there, solid black pretty much. Took head off and sent it to get crack tested, hardness tested and acid bathed. So now I have a block with dirty oil in it and I am wondering what i should do, can I clean out the block? Should I remove sump etc and clean inside with petrol or something?

Knowing my luck when its all cleaned it'll blow up because its not used to it :P

Thoughts please.

ok you need to go back and untie the asian dude, say sorry and hope he doesnt call the cops.

:P

id pull the sump off and clean it. then when its back together do a couple of oil changes, see if you can get an oil high in detergent, you can get a product from castrol thats quite good for that.

The old guy was awesome, he couldn't get his licence anymore and he knew me from when he helped me out when I went to Japan. The sale was awesome, conducted entirely in Japanese

Have you heard of Morey's oil detergent? I have some in garage, should I use that?

Forgot to ask, in the block its a bit rusty round the water passage bits. Is there an easy way to clean these or wouldn't you bother. Its not blocking them up just a thin film on outside.

I agree; if the engine has never had the oil changed, and done 225,000kms, I would rebuild it if it were mine to keep for quite a while.

Guaranteed if you put the reco'ed head on the tired block, the bottom end will go at some stage. What was the water like? Did it have anti-freeze in it? If not, the frost plugs could be ready to let go.....
