Does Toyspeed have a 'Bogan' Vibe?

Postby BlakJak » Tue Nov 07, 2006 7:42 pm

Do you feel that Toyspeed has a 'Boy-racer bogan style' theme / vibe to it?

Genuine feelings please, cut and dried, pick the answer that suits you closest...

Clarification: viewtopic.php?t=48193 started up a conversation tied to Toyspeed Fundraising. The assertion was made that some feel that TS has a general vibe around it involving 'first car owner boyracer bogans'.

I'm interested to know if theres any fact behind this assertion so i need votes either Yes or No. (Not specifically interested in 'sortas' - I want the closest option you can come up with. I will add a third option if demand merits it after a few days.... but i'm hoping for a cut-and-dried yes or no if one is available).

So regardless of any other possible motivation for the poll, please just post your honest answer. For interests sake.

Cheers
BJ

No it doesn't.

At the end of the day - as was stated by Circuit levin i think it was people I am sure will be willing to pay for a decent service.

If TS does not want to attract such attention from a certain genre of people then I feel you would also have to delete certain sections of the board. I guess this would also come at a cost in member numbers using the forum thus a loss of some knowledge. In the past there have been members which were a wealth of information - they're now gone.

*I have edited my own WANKY comments I made last night - Sorry*

not a bogan theme, probably more a boy racer theme, which is what circuit levin said.

get plenty of skids, screamer pipes, 'excessive acceleration' at the old auckland meets, even at the new meets. dont mean to target anyone but even get the toyspeed exec doing that sort of stuff  even had some mean drifting going on

No need to hide it, this is a car forum, ofcourse your gonna get those sorts of people. Dont expect a good image with a free online car forum.

MMC has motorsport affiliation and have a good following and good dedicated tech section. maybe thats whats needed and ill consider membership.

Have you SEEN Hanre? :P
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Enter the issue with a self selecting poll!

I did mean boy racer over bogan, so the poll should say that. I just strung a lot of terms together and bogan was the last... I dont mean skin tight black jean with black ripped jack daniels t shirt wearing old XF ford driving kinda bogan. I mean boy racer "bogan"... if you get my drift.

Well whats the big deal if it is?

Are you going to ban people because they're deemed to be of a certain stereotype?

You think I looked bogan before? ...wait until you see my mean Bogan Mo on Wednesday. 8)

Anyways BJ I voted yes...

Over the past couple of years there has been a definite increase of young know it all internet mechanic type people that has joined the forums. Most of them only posting a whole lot crap all over the show, none of them ever bother to attend the meets or any other social event that we organize for them.

It's all just internet based bullcrap 'just cuz they can'. Mostly it's from the younger crowd that has just got a new 'turbo/20V/4AGZ/TE' or something along those lines.

I vote BANISHMENT to all the halfwits and internet mechanics and you'll get the genuine crowd actually interested in being part of a club and all affiliated activities willing to make a small monthly/annual payment towards keeping the club alive...

Disclaimer:

* used after the word "friends" to indicate a non-literal meaning of the word. Merely stating that i consider them friends even if they hate me (Hanre, Ben, Dave...)

I voted no.

When I joined up last year (needing parts for the FXGT I was rebuilding) I thought "oh yeah, boy racer club" but I have found that most people on here are far more mature than I expected. Sure there are a few bogans posting pure dribble but that happens everywhere in life (or maybe I just attract morons like moths to a light :? ) and I just filter them out when browsing.

Really we are all car guys/gals here of different ages and with different life experiences, those of us who are supposedly more mature and knowledgable are really just these newbies with 10 more years experience  And I think having a forum for the inexperienced newbies to be influenced by a group of more mature, sensible people (and I use that term lightly  ) and hopefully turn them into more sensible car enthusiasts rather than bogans has to be a good thing.
We know that four-wheel drive doesn't work in a racing car, and I proved to myself that it doesn't work very well for rallycross. I'm absolutely convinced that it has no future in rallying, either, even if the regulations allowed it. - Roger Clark (rallying legend), circa 1976

Yeah, it's definately a cyclic thing.

The sad truth is it would take too much hard work to implement a real change in the order of things.

But do we really need it?

As for the custom rank idea... there aint no TS bank account details anywhere so how the $&#$% can anyone make a donation?

Toyspeed is mostly young guys, with relatively inexpensive cars (by which I mean if you were in a Ferrari forum, you'd have more rich folk) in the general scheme of things.

There are some serious petrolheads and spanner spinners here that are all about the "more power" and "I wonder if this would work". There are also a good selection of people who want to do the spoilers / mags / paint / stereo thang.

I wouldn't say it has a bogan vibe though.

If you go back three years, I think the place was "stupider" in the sense that there was more talk about hooning on the road etc. But, I am impressed here by the maturing attitude, with more and more people getting involved in organised speed events at race tracks, drag meetings, drifting.

I think the "car show" aspect of the club has gotten a lot quieter though, maybe a reflection of a slightly different population here.

The TS Bank Account Number can be had simply by _asking_!!!!

As for everyone elses responses...

I'm gratified to see people posting up their honest answers to this, many of which are well thought out.
Revhead is right - i'm sick of going through this year after year as its definately something we seem to cycle in and out of.

Leon, Cahuna - Agree with both of you guys.
Hanre: Agree with you too, except that we're not here to create an elitist society either.

We're not talking about banning anyone. I just want to collect as many contributors opinions as possible. (If you know someone who hasnt voted yet, ask them to vote... !) This is information gathering. Thats all.

I think as a result of the above, there are a lot of people who talk lots... and not based on first hand experience. If you have no money, then you have to talk about doing things instead of doing them. Talk is cheap.

But we all have dreams, and just cos we dont have money now it doesnt mean it wont happen. Im still hellbent on 3sgte'ing my curren, and it will happen. Just it wont happen for several years (money) so i talk about it and slowly collect parts until i can. I think the thing is, everyones willing to sit at their comps and do whatever, talk argue etc. But when it comes to attending meets and events, no one does it... We get maybe 10 people MAX at our auckland meet. How many auckland members are there? As for the "net mechanics" i dont post something unless im pretty sure on it, or unless i can help in some way. Why waste space and time?
