4age 20v Cambelts and tensioners

Postby Cicak » Thu Nov 09, 2006 5:37 pm

I'm going to change cambelts in the 4age 20v i'm about to buy, but i'm wondering what types i need. So i have a few questions, they might sound a bit stupid sorry, couldn't find anything from the search button. I'm changing the cambelt, tensioners and water pump.

how many tensioners are there? is there anything that needs changing while i'm changing these parts? and is there anything to watch out for while these parts are being changed. Thanks heaps, i'm new to the 4age's.

Get them changed at your local Toyota Dealership. When i got mine done they were the cheapest around anywhere, and they valet cleaned my car afterwards too.

they only have one tensioner, be carefull when you are trying to un-do the bolt that holds the tensioner, it only has a small head for the size of the bolt and a few people (including me) have rounded it, i had to grind the head off it to get it off in the end.

It's a black top. I phoned up my local toyota dealer, and they quoted me the cheapest price around, like you mentioned. But, the labour was a bit expensive.

Is there only one tensioner or 2 tensioners in a black top 4age? I phoned BNT and they said that there is one manual tensioner and one hydraulic tensioner. Is that true? or is there only one?

I've phoned toyota, to find out how many tensioners there are. I was told that there was one tensioner, and one guiding plate?

Is it onlt the tensioner that needs to be changed? or does the plate wear out aswell. thank you

blacktop is hydraulic tensioner, from what I remember of my cambelt change nearly 3 years ago.... I'm not sure why they would think there was 2 tensioners.....

if you going to do it yourself, look for Warwicks post in the parts section? and email him your car chassis numbers etc, otherwise get toyota to do it, as it will get done right.
