Fake Trademe?

Postby matt dunn » Thu Nov 23, 2006 11:52 pm

I recieved an email which appears to have come from trademe,
with a question on an auction that is not mine.

Click on the link and it takes me to this,

XXX

I believe it's a fake site trying to get people's passwords,
as I use auto login, and because the address seems wrong?

Reminder: Trademe will never email you asking for your login and/or password.

The same goes for banks.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

I did that the last time they had that scam going, and they suspended my account  for security reasons of course, which I sort of appreciated.

Ofcourse its a scam, there are thousands of these around, mainly for banks. And they are easy to spot, just look at the domain.

http://trademe-co-nzmembersloginaspx.ma ... Login-aspx
break it up

Protocol: [http://]
Top level domain [.com]
Second level domain [.mail333] <- this is fake, obviously not trademe
Sub Domain [trademe-co-nzmembersloginaspx]
File on server: [VerifyISPAS-Trademe-co-nzLogin-aspx]

Domains are read backwords. So for a valid trademe domain HAS to be
[anything].trademe.co.nz read it as New Zealand Company Trademe

For a bank website it has to read New Zealand Company nameofbank
Full stops are the only domain seperators, not hyphens -

How do they disable your account if you used a 'fake' login?

Of course, it's for legit security reasons. As soon as you login to the fake site, you're giving someone else a username and password they are not supposed to have.

I logged in to that website a few times with emails addresses like yourgay@yourgay.com and password f*ckyou but my account was alright

If you use your actual account name, TM somehow gets wind of it, and shuts down your account for security purposes.
Use something like eatadick@yomommashouse.com and you'd be sweet.
