Is this too dodgy?

Postby ollieboy » Sat Nov 25, 2006 5:12 pm

I was talking to a guy who used to work at oilchangers. He said they pump 75 litres of solvent through the engines when they clean them. I had an idea. On one of my cars the sump is really dirty and I'm pressed for time and money and need to get the car going by next Friday and moved off the property (along with all my other broken cars) so I can have a party in the backyard. Would it be fine if I poured some sort of solvent, probably petrol into the sump and turned it over by hand a couple of times to clean the inside? Or will it do something to the engine that is pretty negative?

I would pull sump off and clean it all and the block etc but I don't have time to do that and I would run oil through it until its clear but I don't have the money for oil so this was my next idea.

Put diesel in the sump and run the engine, but dont rev it.

Do that if the engine is off LADA, it is $&#$% from factory so no harm will be done.

If I were you I would not "clean" the engine by pouring stuff in it - it will never clean anything. The effect would be that it will flake loose the sluge which will block the oil strainer which in fact will result in run bearings...

If you want to clean properly you will have to pull it apart.

Also diesel will kill your seals -> you will have major problems with blue smoke and oil leaks after a while.
