ST185 knock sensor

Postby Boosted_162 » Sun Nov 26, 2006 12:48 pm

Having problems with my GT4 as today :(.

Was out driving when the CEL came on. Got home checked them out. 34 and 52. 34 being turbo pressure abnormal (i run quite high boost for standard) and 52 being knock sensor.

Cleared the codes, went for a drive. CEL comes on again (i didnt even hit 10psi) and my idle has turned to shit :?. Check codes again, 34 has gone, but im still getting code 52, which is knock sensor.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Time for a new (expensive) knock sensor, and to turn down the boost. It's a very common problem with 3S-GTEs running above stock boost levels, the knock sensor is very fragile and can't take the repeated knock levels you are getting.

Damn :(

Is it alright to keep driving round till i can get a new one? As long as i keep the boost down?

Anyone got pics of where the knock sensor is, and how hard it is to change it??

It is right below the inlet manifold, almost in middle of the block, probably hard to get because of transfer case (unless 2WD).

Here is the pic -> the threaded hole on top of the cyl #3 is the place for it:

Ahhh yep, i found that on my spare motor and thought it might be it. I also found a gen 1 3SGTE knock sensor, this fine? It screws into a gen 2, just not sure on wiring.

I ended up getting one off REvhead, wasnt that expensive iirc, had to get a new one because the one i got from the wreckers came off a 1991-1992 mr2 and the wires didnt match up, apparantly they changed them a few times throughout the 3s's life?

Hey, at least it sounds like a 3s.

And it seems my ST165 one is different to the facelift ST185 one. :(

Haven't got it out yet, but i'm able to get my hand in behind there, will just need to find a socket that'll fit it.

Warwick, what price range is knock sensors in?

Yeah, just by feeling the shape of the plugs on my gen 1 loom, and the gen 2 loom, i can tell they are different, and thats only between GT4s.

IME of 3S-GTE's Gen I is different from Gen II, which is different again from Gen III, but Gen IV (Caldina) is the same as the Gen III. Well at least the plugs are the same, the sensors may be different.

However I do know than Gen III sensors work in a Gen II, but you have to alter the wiring loom plugs.

I'm using ST185 ECU on my ST165 and it does not fault the knock sensor, also I know that the knock sensor works as on high boost (>1.4bar) I can feel that the car is slower than on slightly lower boost(<1.3bar) (and I get a lot of black smoke).
