VVT should not effect top end performance as it switches off at about 6800rpm. Unless you have siezed VVT pulley, but that should not effect how the light behaiviour.
I think you have hooked the light to wring pin. What you can do is hook it up directly to solenoid (on the exhaust side of the head next to cambelt), and see how it behaves.
