Hey all,

Just checking a possible problem.

When I'm driving in Auckland traffic (read:not going anywhere) my temp sits at about 1/2 and doesn't go any higher. The car idles anywhere between 500 and 800.
When i'm driving at any sort of speed my temp sits almost rock bottom (even after driving in traffic for ages, if thats the case the temp drops like a stone as soon as I start moving) and when I stop at the lights or whatever, when the temp is low, the revs are usually around 1100-1200.

I'm thinking its a symptom of air flowing over the engine cooling it down but concerned it's putting the engine into cold mode thus decreasing efficency.
I don't have the plastic panels on the bottom of the engine bay but I don't think thats the cause here...

ECU Thermostat could be the problem? Gauge seems to read right.

I searched but didn't find the exact answer.

Have you cheacked the thermostat

Your thermostat could be stuck open, when mine did the temperature wasn't too bad when driving normal speed or stopped but on the motorway it was cold as ice.

It does sound a bit like the thermostat has turned up its toes, from the symptoms you have described.

If you take out the thermostat and have a look at it, you should be able to tell pretty quickly if it's stuffed, because it won't be closed like it should. (Note: Don't do this just after you've been trying to get the engine up to temperature... kinda defeats the purpose.)

Thermostats are cheap enough, such that replacing one as a precaution is worthwhile.

Okay.
It comes up to temp fine when it's sitting idling, it's just as soon as I start moving it drops down in temp.
I'll replace the thermostat.
What do I describe the part as- i know there is more than one thermostat in there...
