Turbo 4AGE

Postby Santa'sBoostinSleigh » Thu Nov 30, 2006 8:57 am

well since just about every week there seems to be someone asking about turbo 4AGE's, i thought i'd set up a FAQ type post (ie this will be moved to the FAQ section when it has some good info in it)

DO NOT POST IN HERE IF YOU DONT KNOW WHAT YOURE TALKING ABOUT!
basically dont spam this thread, or it kills the purpose
any crap will be deleted
remember you dont have to post something to watch it, theres a button down the bottom left saying 'watch this topic'

basically one thing i want to come from this thread, is how much work is actually involved in setting up a good 4AGTE
could those in the know please post up info such as:

Block - which series to choose, why, and any other info
Head - which series to choose, why, and any other info
exhaust manifold
intake manifold
injectors
ECU
fueling
pistons - which to use, why, and any other info, costs?
bearings
rods
crank
intercooler - what size, type and mounting orientation
turbo - which to use, why, and any other info, costs?
bov
wiring
wastegate

then of course theres a cert thats needed, and possiby brake upgrades

any helpful info re gearboxes, costs, time periods, clutches etc etc will also be helpful

If you fit or replace a wastegate with something else, or basically anything you should legally cert it

im particularly interested in the clutch/flywheel side of things, was going to start a new thread but may as well put it all in here!
i'm after a flywheel/clutch setup to go on an aw11 4agze block with w55 gearbox, hoping for around 140kw or more. main use would be road, but there will be the odd appearance at trackdays/skid comps etc so needs to handle that!

what are some decent brands of flywheel/clutch/pressure plates for the above use? trd, hks, exedy? anyone had any experience with these brands, is one alot better than the other? obviously the websites for these brands all say they are top quality, but which really is better??

would it be worth it to get an aftermarket lightened flywheel? what is the difference between aftermarket lightened flywheels and a factory 4agze flywheel which has been lightened (including price)? general opinion seems to be lightening standard flywheels isnt a good idea...
and am I going to gain much by running a 232mm flywheel instead of the 224mm 4agze flywheel?

cheers.

Block - 7a cause cubes count
Head - blacktop ......bigger ex ports
exhaust manifold ummm a turbo one ??
intake manifold not the stock one they pop
injectors 500+ cc;'s
ECU should be at least teh equivalent to the money you have spent on the motor
fueling somthing that matches what your aiming to acheve hp wise and then some
pistons - forgies..ross make a good cheap piston..nice and light too
bearings trd ...what else
rods sanez or pauta
crank ummm.....the 7a one
intercooler - evo sized and V mounted
turbo - twinscrol with a matxhing manifold
bov one that works without leaking
wiring $&#$% knows why this is in here

wastegate one per scroll so you dont lesson the effect of a tuned pulse manifold

clutch ??
get a twinplate :D
once you get over 250kw your wasting your time with a single

Take the stock 4AGZE engine, with the supercharger removed. Match it with an N/A inlet manifold, be it a big port or small port head. Could even chuck some Bluetop cams in, if you have some.

Put a action_dan or evil_si turbo manifold on it. Get an intercooler off tardme and plumb it all up, not too big though (depends on how much power you're looking for)

Start at a sensible boost level and go up from there, making sure of the tune.

That seems to be a good base starting point for a lot of turbo 4AGE project. Some stick to it, while others go bigger with more power, but that's when it costs more and more.

vvega, ive been wondering, is a twin scroll/entry better than a normal entry turbo of the same size? some say it is, some say it isnt, and if you could explain you can have my babies?
