Warwick (Revhead) is a bastard... Project ST205 Rally begins

Postby RedMist » Fri Dec 01, 2006 8:44 pm

Due to temporary insanity and some arm twising from Warwick I am now the owner of a very fat ST205....

Nothing beats a Rally EVO 3 going sideways around a hairpin on the gravel.

You got conned!

I know its going to be hard to get the car compeditive. But its only going to be a club car for the first year of its life. If I can get her to loose a few hundred kilos and in addition have a hefty bump in power I'll give her a run in the pack.
I do have a few distinct advantages over the evo.... Its longer, wider, lower and its not bloody ugly! How do I know? The Lancer RS I currently rally is in evo 3 trim.
And if you dont think I could get a ST205 well sideways, then you have never seen me drive. I can slide a lawnmower, with the help of a scandanavian flick.

Becides, I don't think I could pick up an Evo 3 for 4.5k.

4.5k for a ST205 and 5k for an EVO
what's the world coming to?

EVO > ST205 imo ......

Get your ST205 through Jenny Craig first then we'll talk :)

Mitsi are ugly. ST205 looks very good (If only I had the money...). ST205 got very good dimensions. I don't think there will be problem getting to 300hp relaible power even with stock setup. Toyotas of that era are of very high quality - mitsis... well they are crap (I know, I work at car yard, we push about 300 vehicles a month and most problems we have (bar eurpeans - which most are real rubbish) are the mitsis.

yeah, had an intersting convo with a repco worker the other day
rough estimate of every 3rd call recieved was for mitisi parts, far more than toyota. now when you think of the numbers of mitsis vs toyotas on the roads.....

I wouldnt downplay what will be required to get this car compeditive. A shit load of time and money (around the 20k mark if I can keep it cheap!) considerably more so than an Evo (as its all been done before and you can just pickup off the shelf components for the car)

I think I'll have to go down a similar route as Toyota did with the 205 i.e. Cheat.

300hp isnt the issue. Its getting 300hp through a very small restrictor plate positioned just before the turbo. AND..In order to match power to weight ratio of a Evo running 270hp I'll have to pull 316hp.... and thats before we talk about an attempt to make the car faster because its corner speed will be lower. Thats a shyte load of horsies, no wonder Toyota gave up on the Celica as a rally weapon.

Still I believe it can be done, or at the very least I can have a tonne of fun building, racing and giving an Evo the odd nudge.

what size restrictor do you have to run?
your allowed a 38mm arnt you? we use a smaller one and get...... well we get power  i dont think HP is your problem at all.

the only reason they moved away from the celica was marketing.
when they came back form the ban WRC rules were in place, meaning they could use a more mainstream body shape without having to build 4wd turbo 2 door corollas. damn. that would have been cool 8O

If by crap you mean faster, more popular, and harder to maintain, then yep, I agree

Look forward to seeing and hearing progress RedMist :D

I can back that up, and its usually head things too... ie valve stem seals, lifters and the like. Horrendous amounts of calls for 4D56 heads too.

I reckon you've made a great choice... they are very sexy cars indeed :D

I'd definately own one if I could afford it... let us know how the build goes.

What about the dreaded passenger side window that won't wound up properly, and the climate control lightbulb on the left side? Almost ALL the mitsi lancers I saw had this problem.

I'll go down the corolla route I were you to stay competitve, pity we don't get those down here (2 dor AE110's? I think that's what they are), how about import one and transfer all the ST205 stuff over? A lot more competitive imo (and easier on the eye!!!)
