No pull anymore

Postby FrEsH » Thu Dec 07, 2006 12:28 am

Hey guys, i've got a starlet GT which i've been slowly modding up..anyway it has some issues that i can't resolve..

a) it has a high idle, the idle adjustment screw is all the way in and it idles at (cold) 2500rpm and (hot) 1200rpm...this only starting happenign after i got my alternator replaced..

b) it seems to have lost a lot of its pull in the past 6 months or so which is odd because i have put a highflow turbo and external wastegate on it (car lost pull before these mods)..mym ate took me for a ride in his stockish GT and his had a lot more push you into the seatness...

c) it runs pretty rich and burbles and backfires when ur off the gas...backfires when u go back on it too...car doesnt blow any smoke though and runs very smooth...

any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated..i'ved tried checking for ecu error codes and all it does is flash the engine light continuously...

sounds like it's running massively rich, too rich will also lose power, but you dont mention if you have any fueling mods?

you've probably heard before, but have you checked with air/fuel meter?

running slightly rich on idle can also increase the revs (to a point before it tries to stall the engine) and i'm assuming you've checked for vacuum leaks.

sorry can't be too much help, but a few ideas there, and you may have heard them before

if the engine light is flashing all the time, have you checked the codes?

have a check with the timing also - might be a cause for the lack of power.

MrOizo if the engine light flashes constantly does that mean somethings wrong?

Also how would i check teh automatic choke? Could this account for some of the power loss also?

yah... well firstly - does it flash as soon as you turn it on?
or only once you have been driving for a little while?

if its flashing then the diagnostics pins might be bridged.

have a look at the patterns of the flashing.

if its something like [flash] [flash] [flash] pause [flash] [flash] [flash] [flash] long pause....

if its constant flashing without any pauses its indicating that nothing is wrong and that the T & E1 are bridged in the diagnostics plug.

have a look here for a better definition on all this and the meanings of each code:

As for not pulling anymore...you sure you're not just used to the car? And being a passenger, a car always feels faster.
1988 KE70 Wagon - Slowly rusting
1990 NA6 MX-5 - because reasons
2018 Ranger - Because workcar
1997 FD3S RX-7 Type R - all brap, all the time
OMG so shiny!

na my mates agree and they're always passengers..defaintely lost its bite...

Ahhh anotehr thing to do with hte high idleing problem, itsl ike an automatic...as in i put it in first gear and ease teh clutch out giving it no gas at all and it will accelerate up to around 2500rpm...with no gas..just by itself..
