Horn problems with new steering wheel.

Postby haydo » Fri Dec 08, 2006 5:47 pm

Hey guys,

Bought a new steering wheel and a boss kit and installed it with no problems but having troubles with the horn. The boss kit comes with one of those "spaded" wires and that links with another spaded connection wire supplied with the steering wheel which connects up with the horn part of the steering wheel and the boss kit spaded wire. (Hope that make sense). I'm pretty confident i followed the instructions but when i reconnect the positive battery terminal the horn sounds. Any ideas?

Thanks

the wire that goes from the boss kit to the horn button in the steering wheel is usually 12V, the horn button uses the steering column as Ground. Make sure the metal ring on the bottom of the boss kit isn't shorting between the 12v contact on the steering column and some other ground (perhaps your factory steering wheel, like mine, had buttons for cruise control or stereo on it??). i think my post is kinda confusing, ill try to get some photos to explain what i mean.

i get this problem quite often at work it will probably be nothing to do with the wire, if that wire shorts to earth it makes the horn go as its not a 12v supply its the earth end of the circuit that comes from the horn, to be earthed by the horn button, the metal plate that the wire is soldered to behind the boss kit will not be making contact with the horn brush (behind boss kit) i usuall machine the plastic (thats stopping the brush contacting the plate) in the lathe and that sorts it quite nicely.

On the last wheel I bought, it had two spade connections, but was single wire. I plugged it into the incorrect one so it constantly earthed (horn sounding) plugged into the othe one, no problem.
