Postby bluemaumau » Tue Dec 12, 2006 9:16 pm

hey all did a search and people just seemed to say "jamm it then jump on your powerbar" or "use a rattle gun"

well, i cant jamm it and dont own a rattle gun :?

the engine is complete, is there anyway of locking it up so i can undo the 8 bolts?

thanks

1. spanner/power bar/vice grips and a fat prick on the other end of the crank

2. angle grinder

get the engine at tdc
then get a soft nylon rope and feed it into one of the bores that has the piston at the bottom most point.
stuff it in and then try and rotate the engine again... it will get stuck.

then sweet as nanas nuts

I used a big flathead screwdriver, wedged it between a bolt i put into the engine block (usually to hold gearbox on) and the teeth on the flywheel, then just held the screwdriver tightly and undid the bolts

the several times i've done it i've:
1) had someone with a powerbar and a socket on the crank pulley nut.
2) put the bar against the block/ground when its on the crank pully nut.

only problem with number 2 is that it becomes very tight and can be a pain in the ass to get back.

I usually use that method too,
but most times requires two people.

Another method I have seen is,

with a piece of chain, put a bolt through it into one of the clutch mounting threads, and another bolt through where the Gearbox bolts up.
Basically chains the flywheel so it only has limited movement.
Just be careful not to damage threads.

thanks everyone, i just screwd in one of the gearbox bolts and had the brother holding the flathead, worked a treat 8)

A bit pointless now that it's done... but here's how I did it...
Length of 25x25x2mm angle, jammed in a tooth then braced against the block by a second person to stop the flywheel.

I just did it by myself with a powerbar, with pipe for a handle extenstion, and then shoved a crowbar down by the dowl and it worked

you can also bolt a chain from the bellhousing bolt hole to the flywheel

I have a bit of angle Iron, approx 21/2" long that I keep in my toolbox for this.

one of the flat sides wedges against one of the gearbox dowels in the back of the block and the ends lock into the ring gear.

An old school Diesel mechanic I worked with years ago showed me this way and it works everytime.

Method #1 best if engine still complete

Method #2 Image

Locks in bellhousing bolt hole into ring gear

Good for flywheel bolts or crank pulley bolts best if engine on floor same idea as method #1

Always a nody somewhere eh luke??

Or option 3:
get an old section of ring gear from a flywheel, cut it off around 70mm or longer/shorter for application. wind a bolt for the gearbox bellhousing or other with correct thread and long enough to sit out past the ring gear then rotate engine so it jams the ring gear against the bolt and get long pipe over your 1/2 inch powerbar giving extra leverage and should undo. 1 person job and less time consuming, also handy tool to use in the future to bolt the flywheel back on
