Small Port Coolant Drain

Postby solitaire » Fri Dec 15, 2006 3:48 pm

Hiya,

I cant get the collant drain bolt on the engine off my Small Port 4age.. (im assuming im going for the right bolt)

I believe it to be the bolt between the oil pressure send and oil filter pressure sender. Below the exhaust ports kind of between cylinder 1 and 2.

I went so far as to take the radiator out but my socket set was either too short to clear the exhaust manifold or too long to stop it fouling on the ac radiator.

Am i pulling at the right bolt and if anyone has done this can they tell me what they did?

Cheers guys

That sounds like the right bolt... And OMG it was tight as heck to get it off... And awkward... Keep perservering, you're gonna need a big lever arm to get it off...

The coolent drain on the MR2 is under the intake manifold.

It was so tight I gave up.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

Actually, I can't remember if it's under the intake or the exhaust, but i'm 99% certain it's under the intake.

I had to access it under the car, without much room to play with coz of the subframe, gave up.

Are you talking about 3S?
The 4A drain is on the exhaust side between filter and oil pressure sender.

Yeah, the 3S, when I initially had the overheating problem
thought i'll do a "full coolent drain"

"Where's the drain plug, oh yeah, okay, craw under car.. oh yeah... hmmm, nah fk it....."

I had a bare block on the floor and still never managed to get the coolant drain bung out.

Of the 4 or 5 block i have,
none of the coolant bungs have ever come out.

Why are you taking it out anyway?

I've managed to get three 4A bungs out... And they all took some serious effort... 500mm 1/2in drive bar with a little more than the intended force...

Sorry just to clarify my original question is for a 4A... but i have a 3S to so Kenny caught my attention...

The only reason i wanted it off was to completely drain the coolant as its probably never been done....

I suppose the question i should of asked in the first place is "how would you guys do a complete coolant change on a 4a?

You are doing exactly what I did...
if you pull off the bottom hose (or just the drain cock) you leave about a litre in the block/head. If you really wanna do a uber proper job then you sould get that drain cock out.
I don't know for sure, but I suspect it'll be a little easier if the engine is warm.

FWD or RWD?

Hmmm... I'm not sure about room to move in the FWD, but in my ae85 I needed to use a six inch (150mm) extension to space the wrench back, and then I had to carefully work around the a/c unit, exhaust manifold and some other sundry bits in the way.
Like I said, took one heck of an effort to loosen it. The smallport bolt was much tighter than the bluetop ones I did.
Might need the old pipe extension tool... Dangerous but effective...
