Which oil for C52 LSD gearbox?

Postby The_Lorax » Thu Dec 28, 2006 12:37 am

Hello guys,

I just brought a C52 gearbox with LSD that was pulled from a crashed AW11.

When the box is in neutral and I turn one axle the other spins in the same direction. I can see right through the diff, but the center is slightly narrower than the ends where the axle stubs fit in.

I've been told that it is probably a clutch pack LSD. What type of gearbox oil should I be using?

I just talked to Tasman Toyota in New Plymouth and they told me to use 75-90 GL4 oil. They didn't sound too certain though.

What is the additive in the magic TRD LSD oil?

Apparently Valvoline, Elf etc make a 75-90 gearbox oil suitable for LSDs. I'll go have a look in Repco tommorow.

I have a TRD plate LSD in my starlet GT (C52 box), I found after trying a few different oils that Redline 75-90 oil works best , (make sure you DON'T get the 75-90 NS stuff)

"Understeer" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"Oversteer" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"Horsepower" is how fast you hit the fence.
"Torque" is how far you take the fence with you.

From memory I recall TRD Man saying he used to run the Castrol LSD oil (75W90) with the TRD slippery in his rally car rather than the TRD stuff. I personally use Elf 75W90 LSD oil in the Corolla and haven't had any problems with it (my mechanic swears by it, it solved problems one particular Honda rally driver had with eating gearboxes) but it is a little on the pricey side - approx $80 for 4 litres.

Having said that mine (and presumably TRD Mans) were plate LSDs so I don't know if the same oils are suitable for clutch LSDs - I'm a n00b when it comes to diffs, I just know that mine works for me
We know that four-wheel drive doesn't work in a racing car, and I proved to myself that it doesn't work very well for rallycross. I'm absolutely convinced that it has no future in rallying, either, even if the regulations allowed it. - Roger Clark (rallying legend), circa 1976
