Engine vibration, help please

Postby eskimo » Fri Dec 29, 2006 2:18 pm

Hey, I am new to the forum and soon to the club just gota find out where to join and who to pay.

Any way I have just bought I 1996 st206 Toyota curren trd sports with the 3sge twin cam. and love it to bits

I have only done 500kms in it since I have bought it and there is a vibration, like lose exhaust heat shield, coming from the motor at about 3000rpm.

The only issue is that the shield isn't lose at all and it only does it under load and only for a couple of seconds. I had a similar sound in my old st185 gt4 and the mechanic said it was the idler bearing. the cambelt in my curren was replaced 56,000kms ago so I assume they replaced the bearing at the same time.

Would any one know what also could be causing this vibration I don't know to much about the 3rd gen 3's

any assistance would be appreciated

no one can tell with out seeing the car but start with

-water pump
-alnator
-all drive belts includeing pullys
-timeing idler ( dont assume its done most people dont assumption is the mother of all $&#$% ups trust me )

try them first

cheers,

i think i must just get the cambelt replaced as all i have to go on is old owners word and the sticker on the cam cover. that way i can check the water pump and the idler at the same time.

will be interested in the outcome as I hear a rattling sound from my 3sfe engine when I hit the gas.(just for a second) , never bothered to check what rpm but I will say that it is close to 3500. Cambelt changed but waterpump etc have not been changed. Let me know how you go. The thing is, if I rev while stationary, the rattle does not come on.

I agree with Sergei, at least with it being part of the exhaust system. I got the same (annoying) noise. Happens when revving while stationary, so isnt driveline.

Has a cat back exhaust so isnt the 2nd half. My front half of exhaust is mashed due to the ride height so could also possibly be that? I might check it out tomorrow, and replace it with my other front pipe.

EDIT: Could be the top heat shield, my first GT4 didnt have that noise, and it didnt have the shield tho this one does. Not sure what sorta shields the 3rd gen 3SGE has tho

My ST185 has this same rattle to, it does it both under load and when free revving.

I've seen ST185 with the heat shield removed and I always wondered why they would do that, could this be the reason?

Although, my heat shield doesn't seem loose so I can see how it could rattle like that.

If anyone solves it, let us know.
