Don't quote me on this.... actually don't go anywhere near quoting me. However I had thought that the ZE cam pulleys were indexed differently. IE the keyways and the marks were different to that of the 4age.
The answer is Helmholtz!

dude....

On tdc, get No 4 cyl rocking, You want the ex lobes and inlet lobes facing the centre, that would mean the No1 is on Comp, Power stroke.
timing marks should become obvious really once youve done that..

the exhaust cam dowel is facing down not up with bluetops......you shouldnt have both dowels up, if you have then one cam is out.

if it makes any difference, the little markings on the gears are at 1 oclock on the inlet and 11oclock on the exhaust (compared to marking on the backing plate)

Yeap , the dowels that locate the c/belt pulleys

If you get it rocking on 4 then the dowels should be 90 deg from each other, inlet 12 oclock and exhaust 6 oclock, they should be straight up and down. The exhaust valve should have just closed fully and the inlet just about to open (rocking).

Can you get some pics up???

check the position of the lobes first If they are where I mentioned then the cams are sitting in the right position not 180 out. The exhaust cam dowel is around 6 oclock "from memory", if it is sitting around 5 oclock then the pulley notches should be both sitting at 12 oclock.

check the lobes first before worrying about anything else.......

Ok sweet, the cams are sitting on the correct side of the followers. Put the inlet cam pulley mark (Pulley mark not cam dowel) in line with the mark on the back plate and same with the exhaust cam so both are at 12 oclock, the exh cam (dowel) will actually be at 5 oclock not 6.

that should be bang on, just rotate the crank twice once the belts on and double check the marks.

sweet
