um, it needs to be enclosed, if the air can move relatively freely form in front of the sub to behind (i.e. the pressure equalises easily) then you will have pretty much no bass...

A lot of people cut holes in the back but that really only makes a noticable difference if you have a box that is an ideal size for the sub... which in most cases is too big to fit in a car... i have a 10" which goes beautifully with no hole cut in the back...so really in this case if your trying to do cheap and easy just stick it in anything you can find and make sure its sealed :D

edit: doesnt need a vacume... just enough to suffocate anything trapped inside :?

Port sizing is very important. You cant just go putting random holes in the box. If you have the box sealed it will be more puncy, but not as loud...well thats the theory anyway.

ports i would say... internally, there is a spacer, so that the 2 subs, arent sharing the same air space... 1 port for each sub.

By the time you buy the wood, screws, glue, jigsaw + skillsaw (if you don't have them) then invest a decent amount of time, it's a lot cheaper and easier to buy a second hand premade box off trademe.. if you can find one local.

Just go buy one from a car audio place, geeze its not like there mega bucks and if you cant afford that perhaps you shouldnt have started down the sub and amp path.

Cut holes in box means leakey sealed box=Shit. Box with ports that are tuned to a certain frequencey by the length of them=Good.

Put it inb a proper box dude...you can do ireversible damage if the sub doesn`t have the appropriate housing backpressure mounting....

IF you build your own box make sure you do it properly. A decent sub or subs will break a badly made box. I did it to one i made in 30 mins. Although it is really funny.
