No NO im not talking about the stuff you take to get all twisted and messed up.
This is the story i bought this box with shafts and p/plate and flywheel but cant make out whether it is an LSD box or not. Before you tell me to do a search i have already done so but still to no avail cant for the life of me figure this one out.
So here is a pic and a few details.

When i put both shafts in and turn one of them they both turn, but when i hold onto the free turning one i can still turn the other one quite easily.

Ive read does it need oil to function properly or does it only kick in when there is torque. Is it maybe worn? as i dnt really want to be installing it later if it doesnt have an lsd thats part the reason i bought it.
Is it safe to pull it apart just to have a look inside at the diff or do i need one of those hydraulic press things just to check the diff out. Its a ae92 gtz box.

take this with a grain of salt as i know nothing technical about diffs and am the first to admit it. :lol:

i have an ae92 gtz gearbox that is definately lsd on my garage floor awaiting a rebuild at the moment. mine has a trd plate lsd of some sort.

my diff is buggered now.
it will turn both when i turn one if both wheels are off the ground. but if I have only one wheel jacked off the ground it will turn independent of the other one.

im fairly sure when it was not worn out i used to be able to jack one wheel, and do/undo the wheelnuts on it as it would move about an inch and then lock.

if you need any pics for comparison its easy for me to get them now.
apparently when you look through the middle where the shafts go you should be able to see through unobstructed.

You can see through kinda its got a washer type thing in the middle so am i able to take it apart far enough to see the diff then put it back or will it be too difficult to get it back together once i get that far?

looks like a plate type lsd, it should turn both shafts the same way if the plates arint worn out

dont you need oil for the lsd to work? and it has to be a really good oil

How many frikken lsd's types are there everytime its some new one i hear.....can you put a shim in there if its worn. yes when both shafts are in they both turn. Thats what i dont know does it need oil for it to work properly?

plate = clutch type = mechanical

It should have pre load onit if it is this type... my one turns both shafts with or with out oil but it is very tight.

semi looks like the clutch ones in some aw11 c series....

but then again been in a gtz box it could be a viscous (havent looked at one to know) but if its this type its possable it wont lock when turned by hand? someone that has one should be able to inform you.

Im thinking about pulling it apart to have alook and take photos and post them but im scared i pull it apart and need a hydraulic press to put it back together. Good idea?? Bad idea??

if you don't pull yours apart i may do with 1 or both of mine sop i can determine if they are lsd or not, as there is some doubt with the units from various sorces

Yeah please do i need to compare. I tried taking it apart but have stripped all my 12mm sockets so i cant get the 3 bolts on the inside off. SO ill have to find some otherway of getting them out as they are tucked away damn things. Ill try again tomorrow but yeah try get some pics up that would be great.

I think my C series Aw11 lsd was solid looking straight through.
And the E series Lsd was see through.

pretty sure this is a AE92 E51 gearbox, with aftermarket mechanical LSD from aw11

i did discover i had an aw11 presssure plate in there tho, so it may not be ae92 :lol:

its full of suprises

If that box was out of an AW the linkage's would have been changed. Just have a look if you were that concerned.

I thought that AW only came with C series gearboxes. C series being very different to E series so it is impossible to use C parts in E gearbox...

Hmm and again that pic looks pretty similar to the one i posted. Ill try again 2nite to pull it apart. Keep posting what you know or whatever. Thanks.
