Rumbling noise on AE101 FXGT.

Postby Crampy » Sat Jan 13, 2007 4:14 pm

Hi all.
I've got my Sister's FXGT up with me for a bit. I'm doing the big brother thing and fixing bits on it.

It has quite a nasty rumbling noise that increases with speed. She had it in and checked, which ended up getting both front wheel bearings replaced. The rumbling its however still present.
I've just had it in for a wheel alignment, which was miles out, so that'll help save tyres. Rumbling noise still there though.

The rumbling stays when I take it out of gear, so I'm thinking it's going to be either the diff is shot, or one of the driveshafts or the hanger bearing on the long driveshaft.

Anyone had similar problems and remedies to fix it?

i had a hanger bearing sieze on mine and it made a nasty racket. pretty much what you describe.
started as a quiet vibration, over time and at at higher speeds it got louder and turned into a bearing noise, kind of like a hum/whirr/whine. :D

sounds like youve done what i did, and narrowed it down to being related to road speed, and not engine rpm.
theres not that many rotating components that will relate to road speed only, wheel bearings and hanger bearings being the obvious and most likely ones.

id be leaning towards a new driveshaft hanger bearing from what you describe. they are quite common to wear out. can you hear where the noise is coming from? should sound like its coming from towards the centre back of the block.

Swap tyres front to back, and see if that changes the noise. I spent six month convinced I had a dead rear wheel bearing that nobody could diagnose. Turned out it was just really intrusive road noise from the rear tyres (Jap import random tyres).

This obviously will work best if you have different types of tyres front and back.

I've put some other mags on it, for when I got the alignment done. The noise is still there. The tyres I have on it now are My mags with my Goodyear Eagle F1s, so they're not going to make much bad road noise.

Good thing to check first though.

All my sister did was take it to a mechanic and $400 later she had two new front wheel bearings, but still this damn annoying noise. I'm sick of Mechanics f*cking around with her car and not having a clue about it. I'll have to tell her to never go to one again!!!

Big Brother to the rescue! :D

Yeah, narrowing down to road speed does make it a bit easier. I'm going to have to chuck it on axle stands and have a look see, cause it's a bit hard to tell where exactly the noise is coming from. I'm doing an oil change on it tomorrow anyway.

It's got new wheel bearings, so I'll check the hanger bearing and the complete drive shaft while I'm there. I've had to replace the left side drive shaft a while back, cause that was making a hell of a noise.

Hmmm, seems to be an on going theme here. New wheel bearings, needed a wheel alignment, right hand drive shaft buggered and now maybe hanger bearing or right hand driveshaft.
Sounds as though this car had a hard time with it's previous owner (read: F*cking idiot doing skids and thrashing it). I hope to hell he hasn't wreaked the gearbox as well

As long as it's not body parts. They are damn expensive.
She got the piece in the boot hatch that matches the tails light replaced, and that was quoted at something crazy like $700. Luckily my mate works at a Toyota parts place, so magically it was a whole lot cheaper :D

It's done about 135000km on the clock, but who knows if that's true.

Still, not a bad looking car and she loves it. Here's some piccys of it. ps, those mags are mine not her ones.
Also, you may see it has a black grill without a toyota badge.
If anyone has a red one with badge, I'll swap ya!

like you say, axle stands put it in drive, but only like 5th gear to keep engine noise down, and get the wheels turning and have a listen, than should soon tell you if it's hanger bearing, AND whether it's front or back

if i'm around tomorrow i'll walk down the hallway and give you a hand, bu may go to drags depending on weather.

Sweet.
I know it's up front, but still need to see where it is. Axle stands will be a go. I'd say that'd also depend on weather tomorrow though.
Are you racing Brendon, or going to watch?
Did you manage to get that driveshaft sorted sweet as?

driveshaft sorted but i'm not racing as i have no 4th gear, and i tend to need that with about 75meters to go.

bazda will if weather is good, we changed his gearbox today in 3hrs, would have been 2.5hrs but we pissed around for a bit. so we will see.
