supercharger question

Postby Mike- » Sat Jan 13, 2007 9:34 pm

Hey im wanting to buy a gtz that has a broken supercharger bearing, i asked the owner if its ok to drive and he reckons driving will damage both the supercharger and engine, is that right? or does he just want to not start it before i get it home? also if that is the case is there any easy way to disconnect or bypass the supercharger??

any help appreciated

Did the owner say the bearing is broken?

If thats the case, then you will need a new supercharger anyways (unless you want to rebuild it) The motor will be able to start up and idle fine as the supercharger wont be engaged. The seller has either no idea about how the car operates or he is trying to hide something or maybe both.

If you plan on driving it, just disconect the plug thats on the supercharger clutch, that way it will not come on. How far do you plan on driving the car?

I would make sure its the bearings in the supercharger and nothing else..

Disconect the plug in the pic below, the one nearest the pulley.

Iam not too sure if the motor will like been driven hard with the supercharger plug disconected as the computer will think the supercharger is engeged and the air bypass valve (which is open when the supercharger is disengeged, bypassing the supercharger) will be closed, thus there will be stuff all air getting to the motor. So when you are diving it try and stay off the supercharger, there is a light on the dash letting you know when its engaged.

I hope you are getting the car for a good price as it is hard to find a replacement supercharger in good condition, unless its going to be turboed?

it will be a gutless sack of shit with out supercharger, cant compare to 20v.
its ok to drive with s/c unplugged, i drove from rotorua to auckland like that.

if you disconnect the s/c plug and it knocks like a bearing its probably the engine.

id be very wary of the condition of engine.

if its just the supercharger its an easy fix, best way is probably to get a s/h blower and fit,
or just go turbo from the start!!

I would be interested in your stuffed supercharger if you are going to get rid of it.

If you unplug the supercharger the car will run fine (been there done that) presuming that the supercharger is the problem.

To unplug the supercharger - disconnect the plug near the supercharger (from memory there is one ther) or unplug the supercharger relay which is located near the LH strut tower (it is labelled "supercharger" or something).

Performance - not great but not as bad as you might think. Mine would do 155kph with the supercharger unplugged.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

back on topic now, i drove this home and disconnected the supercharger relay but its still making some rude noises, im pretty certain the noises are still coming from the supercharger area, what can this mean?

is the supercharger fine but the pulley bearing rooted? or is it still the supercharger bearing even tho its disconnected?

also when i turn the car off it makes a quite loud gushing sound, i think this is coming from the top mount, but im new to this forced induction so dont really.

i can make a video with sound if that would help you guys identify what the hells goin on!

cheers

its pretty hard to get my hand in there but the belt doesnt feel overly loose, also the previous owner said he replaced the belts as he thought that was the problem, i dont think he replaced the pulleys tho
