Good wearing tyres for 17" alloys

Hi all

I intend to get some 215/45/R17 alloys for my Caldina GT-T.

Can anyone recommend some good, hard wearing tyres for this wheel size? I'm after a tyre that is safe and sticks well, but which will last well (i.e. I'm less after performance than durability). I drive about 200kms/week in mainly urban areas.

Alternatively, is there more choice of tyres in a different wheel size (e.g. 205/45/17?).

I have used the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 with very good results (when I had my Corona) although I had 215-40-17. Found it to be a very good all round tire. Aren't cheap though.

Drove to & from work every day (Porirua - Wgtn CBD) with a trip from Wgtn to Taranaki almost every second weekend.

Found over that time, tire wear was very good.

bout the best you can buy for the price for wet weather grip and good lateral grip in the dry. $220-270 for 205/40/17, shop around a bit. mine have lasted ages even with track work thrown in, which is actually a no no for this particular tyre.

other options are Dunlop DZ101's, i have heard these last slightly longer than the eagle f1's. also good wet weather grip, and slightly less aggressive tread pattern.

also Toyo T1R's are criminally cheap, theres a guy on rexnet who lets loads go cheap sumtimes, as low as 170 for that sized tyre havent heard much about their performance tho.

If you want tyres that'll last, get GT Radials. They are $150 and ive had some last 30,000k's.

Yip, mine lasted 40,000kms on my ae101, and that wasnt driving overly carefully either

Looks like the shortlist is:
-Eagle F1s
-Dunlop Direzzas
-GT Radials.

I've had F1s on my Avensis. Definitely a very sticky tyre. Haven't tried the other brands though, so I might give one of them a crack.

gt radials lasted me 60000. still got 5mm tread on 2 and 3 mm on other 2

DZ101 - Good lasting performance tire, plenty of grip
GSD3 - Stupid amounts of grip, but wears alot quicker

I've had a couple of sets on my Trueno now and got some 15s with them for my AE92 FXGT.

DZ101 are big ups in my book.

Not overly expensive, great performance.

I drive over the wainui hill every day, and they lasted the longest.

I will hand in my vote for the GSD3s as well.

Have had them on the Soarer for a while now and they are brilliant tyres. Got a new set on the way as well.

Direzzas are also very good and one that hasn't been mentioned yet is Pirelli P Zero which has a couple of different models. They are also on the expensive side but a very good tyre with oodles of grip in the wet.

Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3. Had a set of these on my Altezza, I drove hard on them for 2 years up until selling the car and found they still had more than half tread left, I rotated the tires every 10,000km though.

They are not the best performance tire around I had some Bridgestone S02 that would have run rings around them, and the GS03 are very noisy on the road, but for the price, they are a good all-round bang for you buck.

Don’t pay to much, tire retailers have a big margin to move on prices, if they don’t bargain go somewhere else that will!

Huh???? We have given him our suggestion of a tire that lasts well, and delivers outstanding performance. GSD3
