Good wearing tyres for 17" alloys

Postby Mark H » Tue Jan 16, 2007 4:17 pm

Hi guys

Thanks for the continued extensive feedback!

I'd have to agree on the comments on tyre dealers' margins. The best deal out of the three places I've been so far is at Tony's Tyre Service. Tony's can do 4 of the new (2007) TSW 17" 'Black Ice' rims fitted and balanced with Direzzas for $1710 (or $1750 with F1s).

The rims are about $1100, so that means they are doing 4 brand spanking tyres for ~$150 each. And yet F1s retail for $220+. Although the tyres are cheaper because I'm getting the package deal, the technician said that in future, he'd do replacement Direzzas (fitted and balanced) for $150 each. So yes, they are making a fair bit of cream on tyres when people who don't shop around walk in and pay the asking price!

Cheers

M.

been speaking to some people about tyres today,

he recommended bridgestone g3s.

he also said that the dz101s seem to split easy and alot $&#$% out.

wrong

Postby TOYROTA » Thu Jan 18, 2007 4:20 pm

the dz101 does not split it is the dunlop sp3000a that is notorious for splitting and that was caused by a bad batch.
that problem has been solved and those tyres are circulating now

grid 3's are a rather good tyre however they were designd primarily for export and the roads overseas.
from my experiences with them they are to hard a compound and tend to break off in chunks with hard driving.
but thats my opinion.

they only have about half the tread a normal tyre would when they're new, cant be good for lasting long. but cheap, yes

best lasting i've had were Goodyear Eagle something, next one below GSD3 i think

Hers another vote for GSD3 F1s there wet weather performance is unbelieveable and i would rate them against anything out there.Price well its all relative really I don't like to take shortcuts here where the rubber meets the road so they might cost a bit more but I guess if thats the price quality then I'm more than happy to pay..

direzzas I had fared much better in the rain compared to potenza grid3s . However, the direzzas were on 15s and the grid3s were on 17s if that makes any difference.

Go the Goodyear GS-D3's

I had brand new Direzza's on my car when I bought it and I must say that I was very disappointed with thier performance. The grip was not as good as the goodyears especially in the wet and of more concern to me was the the breakaway was not progressive and it took ages for them to grip again once they had broken away. The goodyears give you a good warning when they are going to let go and if they do they don't just let go completely all at once.

The direzza's were also a lot worse under brakes which I didn't expect and was only obvious when we changed to the goodyears. (I had just thought that the car had crap brakes)

These results were on a Caldina GT-4 but I had also used the Goodyears on my previous primera.

cheap = bad (generalisation)

so although you may want something that just does the job, pay extra, wont regret it. Driving a mates car in the rain yesterday, locked up all four wheels trying to stop at a set of lights in the rain!!! not sure what tyres, but obviously "cheap" eagle F1s would be my pick, that one time you need to do an emergency stop they might just save your ass, whereas cheap ones wont and you'll be up for extra costs :P

EDIT: they are nankang ns1 sports or something on mates car, ewwwww

if you want long lasting and to sacrifice all performance get a set of federals.
i had a set on my car when i got it, and i couldnt wear them down no matter how hard i tried . i did burnouts on them and all, theyd only ever make a faint wisp of smoke, and the tread never seemed to go down.
